Liking a video game series but disliking the fanbase

Does anybody else here find that they like a particular video game series but just don't like the fanbase associated with that series? I mean there are some video games out there that are great games but have some pretty crazy obsessive fans who will bash anybody who doesn't agree with their views on the games and will constantly create flamewars on forums so that discussing the games is no longer enjoyable.

For example the Resident Evil series is like that, I have always been a fan of the series and enjoy playing most of the games including the old school and the newer games. But ever since the series took a different route with Resident Evil 4 and changed from survival horror to action it's created a never ending civil war among the fanbase. The fanbase is pretty much split between those who love the older "survival horror" games and think the new games are crap, and the ones who love the newer "action" games and think the old games are crap. These fans will attack each other on message boards every chance they get and believe me when I say the flamewars can get very ugly. I pretty much quit going to the message boards about Resident Evil because of this and it almost makes me embarrassed to be a fan of this series (though that doesn't stop me from loving and playing the games themselves).

Anyways does anybody else here know a game series that is like this? If so share your experiences with them here.

I've been a gamer for over 30 years now. This is every game. You're interacting with a vocal, passionate and inflexible minority.

There are a couple of strategies for dealing with them: either don't engage them and just ignore their posts, or start your training to become a flame warrior.

i dislike how many fanbases conduct themselves in multiplayer.

I hate how CoD lobbies are full of whiny squeakers that shouldnt be playing a 18+ rated game and racist or homophobic pondlife.

GTA 5 online seems to attract trolls who would rather run around killing other players for lulz for the sake of it rather than playing the game.

I just avoid going to video game forums altogether, unless it's a message board like this one here that's part of a website that isn't actually dedicated to video games.

That's almost every game fanbase.

JRPGs, especially Pokemon and some KH fans...too many otakus.

there is a certain gaming site that i feel is actually a game haters' site. they are horrible.

I like the Sonic series but ever since Sonic '06 it felt very trendy to pick at every new 3D Sonic game that was released afterwards to a point where I can't take it anymore.

Silent Hill also has the same problem with after Silent Hill 4.

Resident Evil I can agree with. All it takes is a look at RE 1-3 and the GameCube remake and just 1 minute of game footage from RE6. I'll take Silent Hill Downpour over Resident Evil 6 any day.

These people calling themselves fans but they're just a bunch of ungrateful nitpicking haters.

I like to play COD but hate the immature D bags in the lobbies. Usually I just mute everyone though.

I do dislike the people who think of the Seriously achievements in all of the Gears of War games (which they obtained through mutual boosting sessions, as very few people bothered to get them legitimately) as being an extension of their egos. Really. A lot of people consider it to be truly manly to grind for countless hours. They are proud of these dubious goals they have set up for themselves. It is every bit as pathetic as the middle-aged guy who changes careers, switches his age-appropriate wife for a barely legal bimbo, and spends his retirement funds on a sports car because he wants to give the world the impression that he has a larger cock than the next man. Most of these guys are too young for a midlife crisis like that, and that makes it an even sadder sight to witness.

With that said..... I am having a ton of fun playing through the SP campaign on the first game. I am looking forward to kicking RAAM's ass on Insane difficulty. That takes much bigger balls than the "War Machine" boosting sessions that are so popular these days.

Oh yes. I don't know if it happens much on XBL but on PSN you get individuals who feel the need to play their obnoxiously loud music into the mic. Usually crappy rap or RnB music.

I don't get why people feel the need to inflict their musical tastes on others.

Every VGCommunity sucks, but if you wan't a really terrible one, then I'm surprised no-one has mentioned League of Legends yet.

IMO the best thing you can really do is just put everyone on mute/ignore who isn't a friend. It helps you concentrate on the game, which is why you're there, right?

I don't know about COD because I never play it multiplayer any more (and didn't play COD multiplayer much in total) , but people sometimes play amazingly crappy music when they're playing Magic the Gathering over XBL.
I think they sometimes forget that their headsets are on.

There was one guy who had me laughing my arse off because while playing MTG (and losing) he was playing amusingly rubbish ghetto music while making hilariously ghetto comments about whatever happened in the game.
He said things like - "Oh... no.. dawg, you mean I gottsta put up with this big ass ol' monster motherf*cker now as well ? sheee-it"

Most game forums are best for tips, tricks and advice. If I want to be able to express an opinion without being afraid of the P.C. police, I have other forums I can post on.

In general, I started avoiding all kind of "general" threads in game forum. I like discussing game mechanics, reading about tactics and tricks, or how to acchieve certain skills, or crafting recipes, ...

But when it comes to threads in which people "discuss" personal likes and dislikes, I avoid that like hot oil on my lap. ^^ I am in forums to get informations about games, not to read... stuff. ^^

my brother and i are true Nintendo fans. we love everything Nintendo, and we never complain.
