After its success in patenting the words "Candy" and "Saga" comes the 3rd installment in King's copyright crusade. They ripped off someone else's game?! :D

Update: 01/23/14 King has recently responded to Cox's claims, and has stated, "King does not clone other people's games," going on to say in a statement made to Polygon, the studio does a "thorough search of other games in the marketplace," However despite this, King has now "taken down" Pac-Avoid.

Original Article:

With Candy Crush maker, King.com, recently filing copyrights for the words “candy” and “saga,” the company is quickly becoming a target of hate for many. However, this doesn’t appear to be the first time King has pulled a shady move, as an indie developer recently called out the company for copying his now 5-year old flash game.

Creator Matthew Cox stated his small studio, Stolen Goose, came in contact with King when Goose’s Pac-Manesque avoider game, Scamperghost, was in development. Although King and Stolen Goose failed to come to terms and with no contract ever being signed, King –according to e-mail from the maker of the clone game Pac-Avoid – contacted EpicShadow to “clone [Scamperghost] very quickly,” so that Pac-Avoid could “beat the release of the original game.”

The initial reaction to Pac-Avoid’s release prompted King to e-mail Cox, which stated the company was indeed interested in an avoider game such as Scamperghost. However, as King’s director of product performance, Jars Jornow, went on to say, “The flash world is filled of similar-looking games, and there are probably hundreds of avoider-games with similar menus, a box with enemies, and coins – and we thought Scamper Ghost was awesome.”

So basically, Zynga has travelled into the future and used SCIENCE!! !! gone horribly wrong to clone themselves, bringing the clone back here, calling it "King" and sending it out into the world to do their foul bidding?

Hm. Good to know. I prefer not to give money to evil clones.

Where is Namco in all of this, since they are the original developer of PAC-Man? AFAICT, Pac-Man is still under copyright and trademark protection.

It's not just Namco, it was an entirely different game they ripped off. They just stuck that name on it.

That is correct, Candy Crush is absolutely nothing like Puzzle Quest, Zoo Keeper, or Bejeweled, which, in turn, are not clones of Shariki.

Now, let's forget all this boring legal talk and let me tell you about our next exciting pay-to-play game: it's called Grow-big Italian Plumber Siblings, and we're paying some geeky, zit-faced kids a lot of money to make it for us, so we know you'll love it.

I'm actually fine with copying a concept - if they think they can make a better version of it, be it a game or a book, they have all the means to try. That's how genre's are born.

It gets ugly when people copy it just for the sake of money without having anything new to add, and it's downright disgraceful when people start removing other works. Corporate greed at its finest.

Actually, it really ISNT a clone of those for the most part. Same genre.... but not a clone. It's like the FPS genre, comparing Doom to Hexen, CoD to Halo.... similar games that often use extremely similar mechanics.... but the game in an overall sense is not the same. The closest thing it comes to being a clone of is Bejeweled, yet even that isnt quite right.

A true clone is a bit more like Dota VS HoN.... it's SO much of a direct clone that most of the characters are literal copies of the ones in Dota, right down to their exact skillsets. Merely with name changes and different 3D models. That goes a bit further... ok, a LOT further... than simply using the same mechanics. Granted, there's some really screwball situational reasoning behind that one.... looking into older games, arcade games specifically, Donkey Kong, the original, compared to "Crazy Kong".... Crazy Kong, THAT is a clone. A very direct ripoff.

The problem of course is that King isnt actually doing anything truly new. They looked at others in the genre, and found a way to produce a similar product but with a dramatically stronger effect on the gaming market. Like Zynga has been at times, they are merely masters of marketing. The gaming landscape being what it is these days though, that's more than enough.

I wouldn't know, I haven't played it. I just see "match three" and think "It's not Puzzle Quest, not interested."

And I'm with Zodai. Obviously, I like PQ, so I don't automatically hate clones, but to claim you're not cloning other games and then destroy the competition with legal threats...that's just the lowest of the low.
