Unlocked Camera
I'm just curious if any other Aspie's have this problem. I have a horrifically hard time playing games like WC 3, StarCraft, DotA and LoL with an unlocked camera. The constant extra camera movement requirement I think just throws me for a loop because I tend to be so focused on the task at hand. I keep telling myself to just force myself to get used to it but every time I try for a few games I give up because my anxiety goes through the roof and my skill falls apart. I want to learn this so badly because it really is a significant barrier to more responsive play. I was just wondering if anyone else truly struggled with this but ultimately got through it.
I'm quite familiar with games like that, and to be honest, there's no easy way around the issue.
In some games it's possible to just lock the camera so it's always centered on your character, but this often isnt a good idea. Particularly in a multiplayer game... even MORE so when that multiplayer game is a moba, like Dota or LoL. I think LoL has the option to do it, but nobody uses it, because it's a bloody stupid idea, and will only wreck your performance, because you will get snuck up on soooo much easier, among other issues.
I'd say the best way to get used to it is to mess with it in a single-player environment. Dont worry about "skill" falling apart or something... dont even think about that. In that environment, that simply does not matter. Running dungeons by yourself in Diablo 3, for instance. With nobody around other than you, you can take your sweet time as much as you need to, go at your own pace, and select the difficulty that you want. Even if learning to use the camera slows you down.... do it anyway. Again, ignore what it might appear to be doing to your skill level or something. Key word there being "appear", as it'll actually enhance it in the end. Keep doing it, and simply dont stop. The more you do it, the less frustrating it'll be, until you reach a point where you wont have to worry about being too focused on something else to do it, because it'll be PART of that other task you're doing, it wont be seperate anymore.
I had the same issues when I started with these games, and I kept wondering why I couldnt just use WASD to control the camera or something. I tried that a few times, it was awful. So I just did the blasted mouse anyway, and now I dont have to think about it at all. Or even entirely notice it. It's just automatic and fast at this point.
Heck, you could also try it with games that arent those... games where it wont really damage anything. The Sims for instance, uses that sort of camera, controlled entirely by the mouse, as does many city-builder games. And that's only a couple of examples, but those are games where the stress would be WAY lower, because it slowing you down wont get you run over by a demonic lawnmower or something.
Dont give up though, I say. Alot of those games that you speak of and similar ones are quite worth the effort.
Well I'm mostly a LoL player. I was just short of Gold last season and it just irks me because I know if I could just get used to unlocked camera I could widen my character base and go much higher. But in practice I just get so flustered when there is a lot of action on the screen (like a duel or team fight) and the additional camera movement requirement comes into play.
