I actually own Super R-Type, Contra III, and The Empire Strikes Back, and I agree, they're HARD. 8O I can definitely see why the Game Genie was so popular back then.

Hm, interesting list. Super R-Type is the one I dont agree with; I beat that one as a kid without much trouble. I'd put that one more in the middle, as "traditional" shmup difficulty goes; it's not super difficult, but it's also not super easy like the SNES version of Gradius 3 was. Granted I know I'm not the best one to judge that, but still.

R-Type 3, also on the SNES, is alot harder. As are some other shmups on that console.

And I'm tempted to try out the Castlevania one after seeing this; I really love the way the "classic" Castlevania games play (the ones that happened before the term "Metroidvania" appeared). So that looks like fun.

Dracula X is a pretty solid Castlevania game, even though many people accuse it of being an inferior port of Rondo of Blood, when in actuality all they share are some assets.

I've never been particularly good at the R-Type games, but I will agree that R-Type 3 is harder than Super. Super's main problem is simply all the slowdown it has, since the devs hadn't figured out how to exploit the SNES's capabilities at the time. The fact that the faster ROM chips, required to run games at the full 3.58MHz clockspeed instead of 2.68MHz, were prohibitively expensive for most developers in the system's early days doesn't help either.

Contra 3 is hard? I can easily beat it on Normal even 15 years later. Even on hard I can usually get to the final boss without difficulty. Contra 4 for DS on the other hand.......

I can't get past the third stage on normal, not even with 7 lives. :( Haven't tried on "easy" though.

I thought you were an Aspie?

In all seriousness though, this is where my exceptionally good Aspie memory comes in handy. I had the world's biggest video game geek over to my place last weekend and we played this game (with Game Genie). I had triple his score and lost a quarter as many lives as he did.

I can beat Super C easily with just the 3 lives. I have the whole game practically memorized!

Eh, I have the poor aspie reflexes more than the good aspie memory. :P Trust me, I even think Megaman X is hard, and that's supposed to be one of the easiest games in the series.

Contra 3 is a bit challenging but I did not find it that difficult. I cannot think of a SNES game that I found that hard...
