Why no big Mario game for Wii U?
All nintendo systems have come out with at least one major Mario game. The 64 had Mario 64, Gamecube had Sunshine, and the Wii had Galaxy 1 and 2. The Wii U only has Mario 3D World. IMO this doesn't really count. Its too short and is like a 3D version of New Super Mario Brothers U. Galaxy 1 and 2 were both very long games. I feel like Wii U is incomplete without a bigger Mario game.
They're probably working on one right now.
I actually hope the next Mario is a collect-a-thon like DK 64 or Banjo-Kazooie. I'm starting to miss those games.

You do realize there are 4 bonus worlds after you beat Bowser.
The 4 bonus worlds make up "Championship Road", as in these 4 worlds are extremely difficult to beat.
3D World is the major Mario game with it having a many levels as any other 3D game.
3D World is almost as highly received as Galaxy 1.
3D World is praised for co-op and it's difficulty compared to the other 3D games.
Galaxy 1 is known as gimmicky and short
Galaxy 2 is nicknamed the $50 expansion pack by the media.
Sunshine was hated for being too gimmicky and being rushed.
Mario 64 is hated for focusing too much star collectathon and roaming instead of platforming.
Miyamoto has openly stated there will never be another Mario game in the vein of Mario 64 due press and consumer backlash, same goes for Sunshine.
He did say a continuation of Galaxy line and 3D line are on the table due to how well they were received by consumers.

3D World can and should be considered a "big Mario game", and for me it is one of the best 3D Marios.
In my opinion almost none of the actual Mario games (wii generation or higher) is completely satisfying on the duration factor, since I always beat them and feel like they should have more secret worlds and levels (but this is kinda personal).
But considering or not this factor, 3D world surely is one the Big Mario games.

Let's not forget how hard it is to 100% and unlock everything.
(I need to beat the bonus worlds)
Also you can beat Mario 64, Sunshine, Galaxy 1 and 2 in ~5-7 hours if you don't feel like 100% everything.

It's all pretty subjective though; didnt like the Galaxy games one bit myself. Mostly just found them annoying; that the Wiimote was involved just made them infinitely worse (absolutely cant stand that thing's entire existence). 3D World, on the other hand, suits me pretty well, and seems to have about a bazillion levels. I do consider it the major Mario game for the console so far.
Again Super Mario 3D World is the main Mario game and has just as much, if not more content than the other 3D Mario games.
There has been a big push to force Nintendo to make a multiplayer 3D Mario game for ages now.
Also to remind everyone:
Super Mario 64 - you needed 70 out of 120 stars to get to Bowser, to save the Princess which can be done in ~5 hours.
Unlockables - get all 120 stars you unlock Yoshi on top of the castle who gives you bunch of 1ups when you visit him
Super Mario Sunshine - you only need 70 out of 120 Shinies to get to Bowser to save Peach (this can be done in ~6 hours)
Collect all 120 Shinies and you get a post card of the cast
Super Mario Galaxy 1, you need 70 out of 120 stars to get to Bowser to save Peach (~5 hours if you don't get stumped)
Collect all 120 stars you unlock Luigi as playable character to replay all the levels a Luigi for new stars (in the same locations)
Collect all 240 stars as both Mario and Luigi, you unlock the final stage which is the opening plaza/city stage from the beginning which contains the final star
If you collect 9999 star bits all the coconuts will turn to watermelons (same in Galaxy 2)
Super Mario Galaxy 2, you need 70 out of 120 stars to get to Bowser and save Peach (~5 hours depending on your path)
Get all 120 stars, you unlock Luigi and the Green Star challenge (they are in new places)
Get all 240 stars, you unlock Grandmaster Galaxy
You also get small unlockables for collecting coins and star bits
http://www.gamefaqs.com/wii/960551-supe ... y-2/cheats
Super Mario 3D World doesn't require you to beat all the levels to get to Bowser (~6 hours if you don't get stumped)
Unlockables in 3D World are:
Stamps for Miiverse use
Stamps of each playable character (this requires you to beat all the levels as said character)
Luigi Bros Mini game (it's the Luigi version of the Mario Bros Arcade game) this can be unlocked by beating all 8 worlds or having a Super Luigi U file on your Wii U.
You can get 5 glittering stars on your save file icon, by meeting requirements.
Super Mario 3D world has 11 worlds total (more than any Mario game to date).
Nintendo is done making mainline Mario titles for the current gen.

I'm VERY ocd about Nintendo...you collect Shine Sprites, or Shines, in Sunshine...not Shinies.

I don't quite follow your logic. New Super Mario Bros. Wii U and Super Mario 3D World are platform jumping action games featuring Mario characters where you beat stages and collect coins, get cool powerups/suits, fight bosses, stomp Goombas, etc.
How does that not count?
It's not as if they are spinoff games where Mario characters are featured, but it's not a real Mario game, it's a tennis game...

That style of design grew unpopular after awhile. The way Mario 64 for instance did it was more "impressive"; huge worlds that are totally open that you explore, that dont FEEL confined like traditional platformer levels did, such as the original Super Mario games.
Games like Mario 64 though usually did alot to hide the very simple fact of the extreme amount of backtracking and repetition that you had to do in order to actually complete a level. Not to mention hiding the fact that they actually have very few levels, at least in comparison to how many you can have with the other style of design. Hell, 3D World has a seriously stupid number of levels; Im thinking that some players may actually find it to be too many. Particularly with the green stars that are hidden in all of them.... there's a TON that needs to be done to 100% that game. Alot of platformers either with that style of design, or that are outright 2D games instead of 3D at all, can cram way more levels into them since each individual level doesnt require nearly as much space and such.
Buuuuut, they're not huge and "open" and gorgeous, so... yeah, that sort often gets overlooked. They're often seen nowadays as "casual" games, not real, FULL games (and thus, not worth the price) even just when compared to the full 3D open ones (as opposed to being compared to, say, a braindead FPS, where they'd be REALLY casual, sigh...).
Hell, I remember an arguement on another forum I go to that involved the price of 3D World; it wasnt the full 3D type, so it was "just a silly little game, it should be like half price", which just goes to show how much your typical gamer knows about design costs. But I've heard that opinion ALOT regarding this game. They want it to be more like Galaxy or whatever, if it costs as much as it does.
....and I'm ranting a bit here. Cant say for certain if any of this is why anyone on THIS forum thinks of the game this way, but that's been my experience of hearing others talk about it so far. Or this type of game in general.

That's true, it takes a lot of efforts to unlock the final stage and 100% this one. This game is definitely worthy the full price.
And, God, the stages are so nicely designed! Even though I would love to see another platformer Mario game on the Wii U, for me, 3D world is already the Mario game of the console.
