So, some local game devs came to talk to my class yesterday, and they suggested for me to look into the original Unreal Development Kit as a better place to start then Unity (which I thought was ingenious, though I was the only person in the class that has serious interest in the field as a career, lol), but because I had long ago deleted my copy of UT1999 GOTY and lost the disc a few months later, I have to resort to trying to find it on the internet, and I have had no luck in locating a real copy.

While I am okay with spending $10 dollars to get a copy off of GOG just for the UDK, I am curious if anyone knows the location of the UDK without unreal tourney attached (I played that game into the ground), so if you do, please tell me the URL.

Thanks.

Are you sure they weren't talking about the free version of Unreal Engine 3, which is called Unreal Development Kit (UDK)? The one used in Unreal Tournament was Unreal Engine 1, not UDK.

The earliest and first version of UDK from November 2009 can be downloaded here:
http://download.udk.com/UDKInstall-2009-11-BETA.exe

The last and latest version of UDK from February 2015 can be downloaded here:
http://download.udk.com/UDKInstall-2015-02.exe

Judging by a post on the UDK part of the Epic Games forum, the UDK 2009 branch is described as early releases, great for starting, very few features, so I'd wager that they were talking about this, and not Unreal Engine 1.
The recommended 2009 build is December: http://download.udk.com/UDKInstall-2009-12-BETA.exe

If they were indeed talking about Unreal Engine 1, then I can't help, sorry.

Yes I think they would have meant UDK as in the current one.

You could always use OpenGL directly if you want to get a good understanding of what is going on but I wouldn't recommend trying to create anything too complex, it would just help you get to grips with the maths and how the rendering pipeline actually works. These engines take a lot of programming so don't try and do your own it's a false economy. But no harm in learning some basics.

Thanks for the advice. I think I am going to spend the next few days learning its ins and outs, when I am not on wrong planet or at school. I have always dreamed of becoming an indie developer, though the instructor in my computer programing class said it is one of the most competitive markets out there, but I believe in myself, so I will begin working as hard as I can.

Again, thanks!

Well been an indie means it doesn't matter make your own game and self publish to steam people do it all the time. But getting into the gaming industry is hard it is heavily desired by people just like yourself also you might get less pay than working in the business sector as well. Depends where you are with that I suppose.

But look at it on the other side everything you learn in programming in general will help in the future so it does no harm at the moment. Just make sure you understand you might not get into that sector so would you wish to work in the business sector? Just keep your options open :)
