Wouldn't calling it "Xbox three" make more sense? It's not the first generation Xbox console, it's the third.

Technically, you are correct. It's a marketing thing, the implication being that you will not need any more entertainment devices once you possess the "One". Kind of like how the Xbox 360 was so named because it was going to be a "total revolution"

Xbox 360 was chosen last gen to convey it was on par with PS3.

Market research showed that if they called it Xbox 2 people would view it as inferior to PS3 since 2 is less than 3!

They chose Xbox One, because it is the All in One Entertainment Device (The phrase in mandated in every press release)!
This was the plan for the Xbox from the beginning...

If Microsoft numerated it as 1 it would then would have shown it to be inferior to PS4
Xbox 3 would be perceived as inferior to PS4, since 3 is less than 4.
It would be handing Sony a huge marketing campaign on a silver platter.

It doesn't matter what the name is, Xbox One has been unable to shake the bad image from it's unveiling.
Though sales wise, PS4 is widening the gap in the Xbox markets, though Xbox One should be able to close the gap this holiday in the U.S., U.K., Australia, Ireland, Canada, and a few other countries.

Though PS4 is the market leader in most of Asia and the mainland EU
Strangely enough the Wii U is the market leader in Japan by almost a million units.

It's a reference to a quotation from the ancient and accursed tongue of Redmond:

"One box to rule them all, One box to to find them
One box to bring them all and in the darkness bind them"

360 degrees is also 0 degrees, so the next degree would being 1. One also has three letters so why it would be a word rather than a number. And from the beginning they have marketed it as the" All in One" console.

From 360 to One. That's kind of strange, isn't it?

Read my above comment that in "degrees" of which "360" is a reference to, "1" is the very next degree.

Why is the new empire darkside group in the Force Awakens called the First Order.

For power purposes of course, same thing for Xbox One. The Chosen One and ect....

I really never cared about video game console names. I buy the consoles for the games. Names of products is a marketing thing and that's about it. With some awesome name- they can get more impulse buys and so on, I suppose. However... longtime gamers rarely care about the console name. I mean people nitpick names and say "its bad" but they usually end up buying it anyway for the exclusives.

So you're saying they could have named it Xbox Three?

Oh, I see. A play on words, then.

"All in One Entertainment Device" was a stupid idea. The PC already has that one covered. Xbox should be focused on one thing only - being the best games console out there.

Alot of people use PCs for business and work and such though.

I think what they meant was the Xbox One being ENTIRELY centered around entertainment.

...also PCs can be really irritating. Windows and all...

I thought xBox 360 was called 360 because the gameplay was 360 degrees.

I figured being Microsoft that they should have named it Xbox 3.1.
