Is Final Fantasy XI (eleven) any good now?
Honestly my favorite MMORPG Is by far Final Fantasy XIV (fourteen) but I've been always wondering if Final Fantasy XI is any good today.
Here's what I like about it:
-It looks like the classic Final Fantasy games.
-It has the traditional turn-based combat system which I like.
-has a lot of content since its release.
Have you ever played it before? Would you recommend it to me?

I wouldn't recommend considering how old it is. It's not a game like 14 where you jump in and play after a few weeks you're all caught up. In 11, it takes time. A lot of time.
Despite Abyssea being the best place to level up, that doesn't mean it's really helpful on the front of everything else you'd have to be ready for. The story for all expansions will take you months. And not just 2 or 3, lets go with 6+.
That's not very entertaining since you'll be so far behind in everything, but if you want to get a feel for it, there is private servers available which is kind of a replica of the base game before anything was released, and people still play.
14 is ideal. I play 14. 11 is a thing of the past and holds a special place in my heart, but 14 is the only recommendation.
So not Elvaan, go with Elezens or Auras. ![]()
One thing to keep in mind about 11:
It is very. Very. Very. Slow.
I've played alot of MMOs. Not one of them... not even ONE... was as beyond grindy as this one. Not even CLOSE.
And in this genre, that's REALLY saying something.
In addition, soloing was always basically impossible. Not only would you get experience at an even SLOWER rate, but most enemies cannot be defeated solo.
So if you dont just ADORE the idea of always, always grouping with people (and sitting still and waiting while trying to FIND a group)... then this isnt one to bother with.
Note that this is all based on my previous experiences with the game. It's possible, in theory, that some of this could have changed by now. But this is Square. So I very, very much doubt it.
Particularly when compared to so many other MMOs I've played, this game always seemed to be one that lured players in with flashiness, explosions, and it's name, but didnt actually offer all that much. Not in comparison to other games in the genre, that is. And note I'm speaking purely about the actual gameplay here. Graphics and cutscenes and whatever mean less than nothing to me.
Well Square is pretty much abandoning XI in terms of story updates so there's that to consider. The system was originally based on games like the original Everquest and it shows, painfully at times. Grouping is enforced to a ridiculous degree, drops are infuriatingly RNG based, and many of the classes are down right useless. that said the implementation of Summoner is quite good.
If you are going to get involved in an FF MMO I would recommend Final Fantasy XIV. It went through a major overhaul last year that among other things jettisoned the idiot that was head producing the old version for someone that knows what they're doing and the game just enjoyed its first major expansion with Heavensward. Most of the problems that XI had due to bad design decisions are nonexistent in XIV and it does have a fairly enjoyable storyline that they are adding to in increments. I myself recently stopped playing but will likely pick it up again after a while thanks to some of these regular updates. Find yourself a good Free Company and enjoy what the game has to offer.

Yeah... I'm gonna have to say that finding a Linkshell or Free Company won't always be the ideal approach if you're on the spectrum. Expect many, many NT's to always fail to understand anything you offer/say; or to even be against your sense of an abstract persona.
There are exceptions, but omg people are judgmental. I will forever be FCless. I'm a great tank, but I am okay with some of the raids missing out on my shine as an exceptional player as I cannot stand being around 98% of those who refuse to understand my personality.
Stick it with queues. That's my thing. Still meet potential friends in pugs, or you might actually get a good close knit FC, but I have experienced basically all there is to in 14's community. Not my cup of tea.
I'm sorry you've experienced such negative things from the XIV community. I usually didn't have much trouble except with the idiot elitist raiders. Which server were you on? I was on Excaliber, and my FC, Light, was pretty good and accepting (We're all snarky to a fault for the most part).

Hail from Behemoth, Primal data center.
My original first was Faerie, but when 2.3 dropped shortly after i started playing that's when a lot of drama ensued with the hunts. I accidentently face aggroed an NM and I was getting death threats for my mistake, so I quickly transferred to Leviathan to see what that was like instead.
Levi was pretty good, but it gets old seeing the same people over and over and the only friend I made had quit; someone that they and I spent the premium package on for marriage. After they left, I didn't feel inclined to be there anymore.
Then I transferred to Pandaemonium! A Japanese server, where I was there for several months before I decided that I'd call a friend to ask when he's coming back to play. He wasn't, so as a nice gesture I bought him a time card so we could.
Tl;dr I'm on Behemoth and ready to switch again. (Ex plays there)
I dropped FF 11 many years ago due to the reasons mentioned above (enforced grouping) you can't just do your own thing. FF 14 that all changed you can group up as much as you want / socialise but can play it as if no one else was there as well. I actually played to 50 without a free corp when it came out as I just wanted to get a feel for it. Not currently playing but I will be back.
I've been playing wildstar recently and this is also friendly to solo players but it's plus point is the combat is fast paced so it never seems like a grind even though it lvls slower than others in the genre another plus point it's free! (hence why I am playing it at the moment)

Well Excaliber is always looking for new people and my FC is always looking for new people to snark with so there's that option. Just tell them that Harok sent you.

Really Now!?
Meh I don't mind grinding so long as it feels good doing so.
Sounds like my kind of game!
Also I guess it would be wise to put a sign somewhere in the starting areas of the game that says "NO KIRITOS ALLOWED!! !" just to ward off any Sword Art Online wannabes.
Actually I AM going to bother with this game. Thank you for the temptation!
Is Square Enix notorious for NOT updating Final Fantasy XI?
And it is that "flashiness" that can make anyone like even the worst of games. It is also the reason why many video game companies prefer to make crappy games with all that "flashiness" just in hopes of attracting a certain, often crazy and fanatical, fanbase. *cough* Star Wars Battlefront EA *cough

Hey guys, I'm thinking about buying Final Fantasy XI by Friday and I would really like for some recommendations as to what I should do and what I should avoid.
I'm thinking about being a female Tarutaru Black Mage at the start of the game. Is that okay? Or should I reconsider my class and race choices?

As I recollect they are a good match but not sure if they redid the base stats since I played.

Hm, yes, now that I think about it, I do have trouble imagining you being unable to handle the social aspect in a game like that, haha. You've even held long conversations with me; that's rare.
I suppose I should say, that for what I tend to assume plagues most autistics ( you know, trouble with social stuff) this is really the game to avoid. But if that's not really an issue, the grouping can probably work.
Still bores me to death though.
Ugh, I know. This is why I dont focus on graphics anymore. I refuse to be pulled in by that crap. I used to fall into that trap, back when I hardly had any spending money, and it'd hurt quite a bit, as often I couldnt exactly undo the purchase involved.
These days that's entirely different, but I still refuse to get sucked in by that. It wastes alot of time.
In all honesty, what I think you should REALLY do before investing so much in it is watch some videos of people playing it. Not really short ones either. MMOs are all really major time investments, so it's worth researching the hell out of them before deciding to jump in.
There's no guarantee that watching someone else's 100's to 1000s of hours in game progress is going to help you find out what you think of the game, assuming that it's your objective to play the game.
You will be sorely disappointed as what people now have accomplished post the Adoulin expansion, that if you begin now you won't be getting there for a very long time.
People are also not friendly to newbs starting out, especially this late in the game. Good luck trying to get anyone to help you with your Genkai's, as 95% of everyone else will be too focused on whatever huge content is going on now.
I can't play FFXI or FFXIV because I don't have a PS4. ![]()

FFXI is on PS2 and Xbox 360 but they are shutting them down in march/april I think. PC will only be available after that (while the user base covers the cost of running it that is and then I am sure that will go as well) Not sure how powerful the PC version needs probably not very since its an old game.
It's a shame you can't try out FFXIV it is very good
