I've watched the videos that exist for the game- and it honestly feels like another lackluster game in the series. Nintendo trying to be overly creative- when they don't need to be, in my view.

I still don't know why Nintendo doesn't do a Paper Mario similar to the original and Thousand Year Door! Those are the best ones to me (and many fans as well).

Super Paper Mario was fun, but certainly lacked many RPG elements. It felt like a regular Mario game with a few RPG elements tacked on. At times I feel like the game was going to be just a spinoff Mario game, then they decided to rename it..

I didn't play Sticker Star but I've seen and read a bit about it- looked horrid.

Hopefully more footage later in the year will make Color Splash look a bit better.

As a huge fan of ttyd and the N64 original I feel the same. I have always been a paper Mario guy I just could never get into the Mario and Luigi series. I was so excited when I when heard rumors before the direct that there might be a paper Mario game on the Wii U and when I first saw it I was floored as it looked beautiful but my excitement quickly turned into stoned silence as I realized it might as well be sticker star 2.

I have not played Super Paper Mario but I've heard at least that one has a good story and charming characters. I have played sticker star and not only does it not have a good story there is no rpg elements. I don't know color splash looks like it might have some promise but its not a game that anyone can ever put above the originals as it is now.

I hope they add more characters that inhabit color splash (the trailer only showed toads and a paint bucket) I'm also hoping for the return of partner characters. Also I'm not a fan of the whole sticker star like level set up where it splits the game up as levels you must go through to progress through a map. The gimmick of smashing things with your hammer to paint the world is a dumb idea I wish they would have left out I just feel like the whole color/paint thing has already been done before example: splatoon, epic mickey, the blob, and in a way Super Mario sunshine.

I'm not sure if they will ever make a true to form paper Mario game anymore though because it seem like Nintendo wants The Mario and Luigi series the to be THE Mario RPG while they just experiement with Paper Mario.
Here is a good youtube video about Color Splash that I whole heartedly agree with:

I honestly don't know what Nintendo is thinking with Paper Mario anymore.

It's like they purposely ignore fans wishes, because they want some new style to be what Paper Mario is. Fans arent always against change, but when it's so drastic (like Super Paper Mario, and Sticker Star were) its a problem.

Perhaps if Color Splash sells horribly, Nintendo will wake up and realize fans want the series back to how it was.

i suppose i'm glad i never played paper mario, so i was never attached to the series enough to get worked up over this.

that said, i'm disappointed the toads are all copy and paste now with very little OCs.

i mean...really?
