Rhye's and Fall of Civilization
It's a modification of Civilization IV, and a pretty awesome one at that. It's one of the best simulations of world history (not just a specific point of history) that makes for interesting 'what if' scenarios, too.
In the game I'm playing now, I'm Japan. My historical victory goals are to never lose a city before 1845, be first in score in 1500 AD and to not have any foreign culture in Honshu at some date I can't remember right now. I failed both the first and second one, and since almost the whole world is pissed off at me I can't win a Diplomatic victory. The only option I have left is the space race.
To win the space race one needs a good amount of research, a source of aluminium and a fair amount of productive cities to build the space craft. My colonies in Australia will supply me with aluminium, but I'm kind of lagging behin in technology, and I might need a few production centers.
Here are a few screenshots:
Good old Japan. Though Kyoto and Tokyo can't do everything by itself!
As China descended into a civil war, I decided to carve out an empire of my own. The independant cities were quite tough, but I managed to get most of the cities before the Mongols spawned. There is still an independant city in Tibet, but I can't bother to take that one. The Mongols were a bit restless, but I think they've calmed down.
My colony in Jayakarta has almost no production, but many resources and population. I'm also thinking of making a colony northeast of Jayakarta. (Is it the Phillippines?)
I have a somewhat established city on South Island and a newly started colony near Tasmania. New Zeeland should act as a producer of settlers to further cash in on Australia...
What are the Euro Trash planning? Nothing good, for sure. They're pretty pissed off at me for following the heathen ways of Confucianism, so I should switch to more secular ways when I've researched Liberalism. The Vikings even declared war on me for seemingly no reason.

i think ive got this - does it come included with the official add ons? i did install is the 'Thomas War' mod as well though, but thats all.
I think i won thomas war on 'monarch' level (huge continents & islands, standard options) then gave up with emperor. it was at least one level harder than the vanilla version, imo. I think i eventually beat civ3 on the hardest level, but i cant be arsed going through all that again
do you consider it 'cheating' if you go back to a previous save & replay with the benefit of knowing what events & resources to expect? I never felt 100% comfortable - perhaps i should play on a lower level & not backtrack at all. just to validate myself of course.
In Vanilla I downloaded it, but an improved version comes with the Beyond the Sword expansion pack.
I'm stuck on the Prince difficulty level right now.

A lot of people say Civ3 has better gameplay, but I really can't understand why, even though I've played Civ3 for a longer time than Civ4. I replayed it a while ago and I just felt... bleh.

I'm unsure about that, to be honest.

^^ Yaye, I too have download the happy modification, yet just the happy vanilla version as I do not possess an expansion packs and alos have not played in a very long time. This is due to the fact that there appears to be a little buggy friend in my computer and the game does not function even when I reinstall a number of times. ^^I too played as happy Japan, yet China persisted in invading me and I believe eventually the game crashed into the current situation.
