Awesome Game: Chrono Trigger
This time, I decided to do a game that people had actually played! And yes, I had already played this game. However, I hadn't played the KWhazit version (which could've used some proofreading), so it still had something new to offer!
It should be noted that this is the SNES version, not either of the PSX or DS versions.
Anyway, this is the best RPG of all time. Why? Because it involves time travel! Get it? It was a terrible joke!
So, the game begins in 1000 A.D. (the game uses B.C./A.D. despite the lack of Christianity in its universe). In this 1000 A.D., there are guns and robots. Well, there's one robot. And it's not important.
Where was I? Right! The National Foundation Millennial Fair! Yes, the game begins with a huge party that people from all over the world want to visit! Hooray! At the fair, your main character (Crono)'s inexplicable inventor friend, Lucca, is unvailing her new telepod. Did I mention that this was 1000 A.D.?
On the way to the pod, Crono bumps into a mysterious (for now) girl named Marle. Well, to summarize, weird crap happens with the telepod, and Marle gets sucked into the past. Crono follows after, and thus begins a time-traveling quest to save the future!
Oh, and sorry if I just spoiled a plot-point for you, but that's on the back of the freaking box.
Now, this game's time-travel mechanics are such that changes made to the past result in a new timeline, except for time-travelers, who have immunity. This means that certain timelines naturally generate new ones. The timeline mechanics are complex enough to become an obsession. Oh, and this game has 13 endings.
Now, the graphics! They're good. You know how FF6 had good graphics? Well, these are better. The enemies move.
...And the characters were all designed by Akira Toriyama. Yay!
Now, the sound. Specifically, the music, because it's hard to comment on 16-bit sound effects that get their job done.
The music is often very catchy. Seriously. I have three tracks from the game running through my head right now!
Also, there was a sequel much later, called Chrono Cross. The sequel's storyline is the result of a twice-succeeded, previously altered timeline resulting in a dimensional split. I'm not sure that even Masato Katou can keep all of that straight!
So, right, the game is really good. Play it if you haven't. You could even play it again if you have. Also, if you haven't played it, then you may want to try the DS version. There! Now it's a game on a current system! Ha!
End.
My favorite RPG of all time. I got the DS version for Christmas last year, and it stayed very close to original version. It has the cut-scenes from the PS version, a monster breeding simulator (which I didn't really care for), two new side quests, and a new alternate ending that ties both Trigger and Cross together. I highly recommend it as well.
I've read about the new ending...
SPOILERS!! !!
I have to say, though, that they really shouldn't've shown Magus actually finding Sara (Schala), because that's just dramatically wrong. The idea of having Magus go off in search of her was much better.
Now, as far as tying Trigger and Cross together, how about an ending that tells us how Gasch (Belthasar) found out about the TimeDevourer, driving him to cause the Time Crash, hm?
How about showing how Porre defeated Guardia? Sure, they had the Grandleon, but not nearly to its full power. And wasn't Crono next in line for succession to the throne? Wouldn't he defend his kingdom by effortlessly obliterating the enemy army?
Also, how did Lynx and Harle overpower Lucca, a master of fire magic who could melt their eyes pretty much by looking in their general direction?
And clearly, they still had the Sylbird, given the drawings in the orphanage in Chrono Cross.
END SPOILERS!! !!
I have played all three versions. It's my second most favorite game next to Vagrant Story. I just got Crono to level 99 or stars on my DS version. It's good to see the extra material you get whenever you beat the game anywhere in the story. I want to see a new version of Chrono Cross sometime also. Can I download it from the Playstation Network classics?
