In your opinion what was Sony's biggest screw up?

For me it was the original price of the PS3 which was not enough to make a profit on the each unit sold. For me I was turned off by the high price, lack of stellar games, price of games.

IMO, one of Sony's biggest screwup was being very tolerant of poor quality...Looking back at the Playstation and then looking at the games other consoles were putting out at the time, it seems like Sony single-handedly invented shovelware, and left all future consoles to share the burden :x

Not so much a "screw-up" I suppose, but I've always hated the fact that when bringing games over to the US, they would always switch the functions between the B and the A buttons (or whatever they're called...star and trapezoid??). Through the SNES era, I was always used to A being the "okay" button, and B being "cancel", but for some reason, Sony of America didn't agree. I always thought it was just a changing of the times, but then I read on Wikipedia a while back that this is only a US thing, and the Japanese games are all fine. I'll never understand that one :?

Biggest biggest screwup though...Sony likes to use cheap malfunctioning components :x

The price is the biggest thing. Outside of the video game realm, putting in the Blu Ray player helped. Not on the games front, but HD DVD would be the standard if PS3 just went with DVD.

I would say the use of discs, they get easily damaged, nothing wrong with the good old reliable cartridge ROM's

The PS3 was expensive because of the Blu-ray. Compared to production costs, Wii is far more expensive than both the Xbox 360 and the PS3.

Sony's biggest screwup is with the PS3 - over here (Australia) the biggest selling console is still the PS2 (it's still outselling PS3, XBox360 and even the mighty Wii).

The biggest PS3 screw up....

Removing Support for old PS2 Games.

I'd have considered a PS3 as a Blu-Ray player but not any more... If I can't play PS2 games on it then my old games are wasted - I'd rather buy a second PS2.

the psp.
too concentrated on all round media, rather than a serious handheld gaming console.
too many port overs from older sony consoles, wheres all the games unique to psp, games created just for psps controls and layout.

The very reason why they're making money is because the Wii is expensive. BMW also makes money, despite the fact that Skoda produces similar models for much lower prices. The Wii isn't that much more powerfull than the Gamecube, and motion sensors aren't expensive. Because of this, I don't see why the fuck the Wii is four times as expensive as the Gamecube was before it was removed from the market.

On topic: Sony's biggest screw-up was the removal of the Emotion Engine chip from the PS3.

Dunno about 360 and Wii, but PS2 is definitely outselling the PS3 here in the States. Most people only buy a PS3 to get a good BluRay player for a low price.

Sony's biggest screw-up is that they think they know best what the consumer market wants, instead of trying to understand what consumers actually want. They're like Apple in that regard. Microsoft and Nintendo have varying degrees of that as well, though they're more likely to get consumer input than Sony...

Wait, did they remove that feature in the newer version? My brother bought his PS3 when it first came out ($1000 bucks, but it was worth it) and I'm able to play MGS2 on it.

-Shrugs- I don't think I'd fork out the money for something that didn't play PS2 games either. The only reason we'vre got a PS3 is because my brother bought it.

Originally they lowered the price of the PS3 for Americans cause Sony knew they would complain about it  I guess they lowered it even more then.

They removed the parts that allowed it to play old PS2 games I don't see how it could lower the price that much the technology is ancient.
