Ok, I'm trying to learn to play guitar hero on hard, and i'm not doing so good. Any tips on where to place your fingers when playing songs with that damn orange button? My aching fingers will thank you.

The only advice is practise. Although taking a break and then coming back to it has helped me before.

Just place your fingers normally and slide your pinky to get to the orange button. It will probably take some time to get used to, but once you've trained your pinky to move fast enough, it shouldn't be that hard. It took me months of attempting hard mode before I could get my pinky to move the way I wanted it to, but it's like riding a bicycle, once you've learned you'll always be able to do it from then on out.

I move my whole hand. Most of the riffs either use the orange note primarily or the green note. I just move my hand to whichever position is dominating. It really just takes practice, though.
Do you play on XBox?

I started with just moving my pinky, but now I move my hand around to play (expert now). I haven't played guitar hero in forever. Rock band is the way to go :D Guitar hero makes hideous noises when you miss.

I like the Guitar Hero World Tour intruments with the Rock Band 2 game. I hate the RB2 guitar, though. The strum bar is too spongy, I can't play it.

I still use my guitar hero I guitar ... it's held together with electrical tape... and has had at least 4 internal "surgeries".

I just move my entire hand...I play real guitar, so I don't use my pinky too often, except for some of the more difficult three-finger weedlies in GH:Aerosmith.

It takes a little while for your fingers to figure it out, but once you convince yourself to just play it like a "real" guitar instead of a videogame, it makes everything much easier. Little bit easier to do with a Rock Band controller, since it's a lot easier to slide the frets.

Okay, that's going a bit overboard :x

For that price, you could just buy a pretty nice real instrument.

Skimp a little and you could get an amp and accessories as well.

There's an amp and a fake set of pedals, too. The ad for the amp says it works with "real guitars" too. :P
There was even an official Rock Band light and fog machine at GameStop for awhile, but somebody must have actually bought it because I didn't see it last time I was there.
Some people do indeed go overboard with their faux rock. :P

For the record, I have GH:III for the Wii.
