I think Super Mario World is totally easy. I think I've got all 96 goals at a few different times (I like doing that glitch in Forest of Illusion 1, though - makes it even easier
).
New Super Mario Bros. was all right, but it was lacking in cool power-ups (not big on the Mega Mushroom
). I also would have liked to see larger level / map designs, and maybe even 2D graphics.
These three are my favorites, though:
Super Mario Bros. 2 (By which I mean The Lost Levels) was challenging and had some neat levels.
Super Mario Bros. 3 was excellent, with all sorts of rad items (Super Leaf, Frog Suit, Tanuki Suit, Kuribo Shoe, and the gnarly Hammer Bro. Suit
).
Yoshi's Island was a nice game. I like the regular Mario gameplay better, but this was good and challenging (but there was at least one level that was hell to beat - I think it was the fifth world fort). I did eventually beat the game when I was ten. Unfortunately, the cartridge got messed up and I lost my files a few years ago.

Does super paper mario count as a 2D game?
I don't think so because you can move in 3 dimensions.
