Once, a while back, a little white kid on my school bus with short hair wearing a camo jacket and a confederate flag uttered, "If I see'd a redneck hillbilly, I'd shoot 'im!"

I have seen some well fed, well dressed, suburban people who have gone to school, voted, held jobs, yet are very narrow minded, bigoted, and ignorant.
I've also seen people who live in shacks or in their cars who are smart and enlightened.
You can't always tell with people.

Like the Taliban of Afghnistan who hides up in to mountains and refuses to let the old Taliban regime die. I would call them Taliban Mountainbillys:
They are not drunkards, but they grow fields of opium to fund their cause and they are racist ethnocentric and not very nice people.

a redneck is proud to be an ignorant dumb azz

a hillbilly is proud to be a poor ignorant dumb azz

you won't see a hillbilly with a nice bass boat behind a decked out duellie crewcab pickup, somebody with a rig like that is a redneck

the hillbilly wishes he had a real fishing pole  with one of those fancy zebco reels like the rich folks got.

a redneck buys a few cases of beer and a bottle of Jack Daniels, a hillbilly makes moonshine

Those of you who have pointed out that "redneck" refers to a sunburned neck are, I believe correct. The term comes from the the first hundred years or so of American colonial existence, where the South was a dumping ground for indentured servants and people from debtors' prison. Essentially, they were white slaves. These people were from Ireland, and completely unsuited to live in the heat & humidity of the South. They burned red in the sun, and moved and spoke slowly. After a while, it was determined that Africans would be better suited for the slave work, and you know the rest of the story.

The idea that all Southerners owned slaves is erroneous-it was a very small percentage. Southerners had many issues with the North, many of them economic. The North forced the South to pay off most of the Revolutionary War debts, whereas the North paid very little. The North had the factories and the railroads and were getting rich, while the South was primarily agricultural. The South seceeded to try and form their own country away from the economic opression of the North. Now, keep in mind, I AM NOT JUSTIFYING SLAVERY, but trying to explain why the South is poor and often ignorant.

When Sherman marched through the South, he was under orders from Lincoln to destroy everything and do whatever was necessary to stop the Southern war effort. He burned crops, schools, shot civilians, and his troops raped and pillaged. Lincoln was no saint either...in the debates with Douglas, he delcared his position to be one of race seperation-sending the blacks back to Africa. The Civil War was supposed to be about freeing the slaves-so how come Lincoln didn't get around to it until almost 3 years after the war started? Because he only wanted the blacks in the South to rise up against their masters (most of whom did not.) Lincoln also suspended Posse Comitatus and used the army and navy to quell draft protestors in the North.

When the war was over, the South was flooded with carpetbaggers-shysters from the North who continued to get rich off the South by buying up land cheap and constructing shady deals.

So there you have it-the lowest class of white people, oppressed by their fellow whites for 200 years.

economic opression
---------------------------------

It sounds good, but the new york banker types have always had a grip on the rural famer type

It probably wasn't a north south thing, more like a poor rich thing and it just happened the wealthy with most of the money where up north and they suckered these peasants up here to kill the peasants down there for getting annoyed about turning over most of their money to the wealthy.

Today the royal prince of oil is sitting in england having tea with the queen and the 2 of them are laughing up a storm as they argue about who's peasants will win the war in the middle east, the queen laughs and says her american peasants will kick his peasants butts and he laughs they are weak and will give up and pours the queen some more tea and she offers him a piece of cake.

Sadly, that's probably the most likely.

We just call them hoosiers here in St. Louis and leave it at that. You know, they're the ones who park on the wrong side of the road, have rusting cars on their front lawn, have big tin tubs in their backyard, speak with a "woodsy" accent, shop at Wal-Mart en masse, and eat McDonald's all day. That's the stereotype at least.

Redneck: A person from the South-East United States (predominitly, but also found elsewhere. Proud of there heritage, can be any color, and are NOT racists, neo-cons, etc. Is known to fly the Rebel flag, but to celebrate heritage, and not hate.

Hillbilly: A person who is known as a racist, drunkerd, and over... not a very nice person. Does not recogonnize the United States Government, instead, refuses to let the old Conferate States of America die.

I hope this clears up some pre-dispositions....

redneck for whites is like nigg-er for blacks; what you call a hillbilly is a redneck.

hillbilly is a flatland farmer. i am a hillbilly because i am from the michigan flatland farming communities.

your amusing definitions are off .

I was told the term redneck came from having hair so short that your neck was sunburned. When I was growing up, the rednecks were the ones with the reputation for beating up hippies and minorities, and we were advised to be careful around them. Maybe the words mean something different today.

I never hear anyone mention the melungeons.

that is what i was taught.

i dress in flanel shirts, blue jeans, camo pants, camo jackets, i am hillbilly. and guess what i do not treat anyone like s**t unless they disrespect me. i have never had a racial insident in my life, verbal or physical.
i look like a mountain man beard and all.

i am bigoted i admit that. racist no i will dent that one, because i do not think a fat unemployed toothless uneducated slob that is not black is better then a law abidding educated nice black person just becasue he is a member of a certain race.

but i do not believe in equality at all. men are not created or born equal.

I have a friend that has debated me on the legal merits of the Civil War and doesn't like Abraham Lincoln at all but he is very anti-racist. He thinks that secessionist movements today are silly and pointless. I don't think he would call himself a hillbilly or a redneck. Then again he's from Texas.

These things get kind of individualist in nature I think.
