Why are politics taboo or absolutism in the US, Singapore and China?

They have a nice boat in Singapore and Hong Kong and they do not want anyone to rock it. If I were rich in these places I would want to keep it the way it is. Political agitation can only upset a Good Thing.

But as a Singaporean, I can see the holes in our vessels.

I cannot discuss politics with people from the US, Singapore or China. I was once kicked out of an english speaking chinese discussion board at http://bbs.chinadaily.com.cn/index.php because I was too critical to the regime. Before I was kicked out, I was flamed and shouted at by the community.

That's probably because it is called the people's republic of China because most of the people in there have been in the government's total control ever since before they were born (their parents).

And the website, even if the admins were progressive, they would be forced to ban you if they don't want to themselves be banned.

For China the answer is obvious, as it is for most of the world.

The reason is that China is not a democracy.

You can get into trouble discussing politics
To invite others to discuss politics is tandemount inviting them to commit crimes.

Most of Asia, virtually all of Africa, the governments arel authoritarian regimes if not dictatorships in which the citizenry are not really free to debate. So that has alot to do with it.

I suppose other cultural factor might come in play. In Asian countries its a normal part of converstation to ask and chat about your wages or salary. Asking what you make is considered rude in America. So there might cultural taboos about prying into one's political beliefs is some countries as well.

For singapore I couldnt say- its a capitalist democracy but its benignly authoritarian as I understand it- almost a benovelent dictatorship. Its probably just cultural that you dont yak about politics.

The US is a democracy - and if you decide to become a regular here on the PPR forum of wrong planet ( an American website) youll be able to get all of the debating you could ever want.

But what you actually complained about happening on the american website was not a resentment toward discussion per se- what you got was everyone having the same one opinion and then ganging up on you. Thats interesting.

I dunno - maybe americans have more of herd mentality than Europeans.
Or maybe capital punishment is just more one sidedly popular here than in europe.

Cultural factors in Singapore? You're right.
