check out the posts from ArrantParriah, who is belittling me instead of actually saying anything useful irt the topic at hand. I have not insulted anybody, I have mocked their positions when they have repeated the same sh** ad nauseam. This last part is pretty much a PPR tradition

"Belittling?" I gave you a gold star, for Heaven's sake. What do you want: the whole box?

I've wondered before if that sort of thing affects people's opinions on speech and censorship; as an American I've had the absolute goodness and righteousness of free speech drilled into me from a young age, and I find that I often clash with non-Americans who don't value it as highly as I do.

What's bugging me about what you've been doing Vigilans is that to me it seems like you're saying that because this is a private website it's ridiculous and futile to complain about being censored or unfairly singled out over views, and taken it upon yourself to pile on in denouncing those who do so as fools and whiners. I'll be the fist to tell you that yes, as a private board Alex is free to rule WP however he chooses; that does NOT however mean that people shouldn't speak out when they think the rules are being enforced unevenly, that they are being picked on, they think a rule itself is causing problems, etc. Just like the site needs people to report spam and trolling when they see it, the site needs members who're willing to speak up when they see internal issues.

Ah, I perceive the strategy. Very clever.

You select a few key vocabulary words from the Site Rules ("trolling", "belittling", etc.) and casually apply them to your opponent, while engaging much more strenuously in the same behaviours yourself. But, since I didn't bother to label your comments as such, they are not identified as "trolling", "belittling", or other red-flag behaviours that constitute "violations."

Then, when everyone's favourite moderator shows up (and we all know that she eventually will), I get a spanking (I know that I am overdue), and you get whatever reward accrues to those who butter up the moderators (and I have no way of knowing what that reward is).

Such is the state of so-called "free speech." There are always going to be tricks and constraints, no matter what.

You are indeed the Master of Free Speech. :hail:

I think you misunderstand me, I value free speech greatly. Having the government enforcing rules about the display of language on private property in an extremely invasive and offensively motivated way has led me to conclude that private enterprises, forums, etc, should have control over what they display and what they do not display.

People should speak out about issues that concern them, but I feel the term censorship lately is just being abused by select members who want to get back at certain moderators who they have personal animosity towards.

Gentlemen, you're both beautiful - can we return this back to civil debate?

It would have been nice had it simply stayed that way. Apparently me voicing my opinion is too much for some people

My vote: Should be used in moderation if the situation calls for it.

Although to me that is subjective......

In a situation where, say, a journalist is attached to a military unit, I think it is called for, to prevent accidental or intentional revealing of sensitive information that could cost lives. For example

Ohhhhh... this thread is a rant against WP moderators....now I get it.
I thought it was an actual debate/discussion about censorship.
I'm a little slow on the uptake in these situations.

To be fair to the OP, it was hijacked.

Most of the people who are complaining about censorship seem to have a rather large amount of posts. I am certain other moderators have overstepped their limits previously, so can these people produce any evidence of them complaining about it then?

It should only be used if it protects the public from harm. Such as child porn obviously and military information that could jeopardize our troops. Other than that yes WP is a private site but I still think whatever issues people have with censorship in the forum is worth discussing. This is how progress is made when it comes to anything. Personally I have an issue with the fact that political correctness is so strictly enforced while personal attacks and insults seem to be inconsistently enforced.

Quote:
2. Personal attacks.
This includes insinuation, ridicule and personal insults, regardless of whether direct or indirect. Attacking an opinion, belief or philosophy is acceptable, but attacking the person making the comments is not. “Heated debates” are also acceptable, provided this guideline is respected.
You know how much of this crap goes on in PPR? It amazes me how often blatant personal attacks get overlooked and how people who habitually pull this crap should've been banned long ago.

Anyways, now that I got it out of the way, I have no issues with the rules themselves, I just think there needs to be more moderators so that the judgment calls are more "evenly distributed". But it's a privately owned website right? Yes, I respect that. I have an issue with some of the moderating not the rules themselves. I don't have any inherent issues with the website itself.
