I think it's considered a compliment because Casanova was purported to have a very large penis, so most guys would consider that a compliment, imho.

I don't think penis size even comes into it.

People don't need to be told what it means, they already know. It means someone who has charm but is a bit of a cad. it is quite simple really.

It also not in everyday use anyway.
A lot of things can happen in those 20 years that separate your age from mine. ;)

"you're a kid Casanova, you're no josep" - Buzzcocks from "Orgasm Addict"

Carrie Underwood "Cowboy Casanova"

Hoodie Allen "Casanova"

many disgruntled males have seen that i have the possibility to be intimate with girls they like, but their attitude lives inside their own skulls. "cassanova" is just a sound that they make like randomly twittering birds who have a working tongue and an ability to imitate.

Hm.. I don't know that it's accurate to refer to him as a pedophile. In the 1700s, it was pretty common for girls to be considered women, and get married and have kids, in their very early teen years. They also did not live as long as we do now.

I certainly don't think pedophile or rapist when I hear someone referring to another person as a "casanova". It seems that people either mean that the person is a smooth talking romantic, or a womanizer, as others have said.

Im the same age as you and I agree with zero that casanova equals womanizer, which equals charming scoundrel. Simple as that. His "size" was never on the public radar screen and is irrelevant.

Over in these parts, we compared Casanova to Errol Flynn...so it must have been yet another 'Aussie cultural thing' then.

I am not aware of Errol Flynn being especially well endowed anatomically either.

Because of his scandalous love life in the 30's/40's Flynn was thought of in the US (much like Casanova) as an iconic cad. And guys of my parents generation coined the expression "in like Flynn" to describe a date with a lady that -went well- shall we say.

Even today in the U.S. when guys are trying to fix things and two parts finally snap together you will hear "there...its in like Flynn" even though the cultural reference to Errol Flynn is kinda fading from memory.
