He complains about "taxes" which implies rightwing, but he complains about the rich -which implies left wing, but then its just rich folks "north of Richmond" which could be taken different ways. Could just mean "faraway elites" (ergo generic populism of either stripe), or it could mean "the north is victimizing us in the south" (which kinda implies rightwing nostalgia for the old south).

Basically its just one guy's populist statement that really cant be pigeonholed the usual ways.

Forgot...he also bashes folks "on welfare". So thats usually a Rightwing talking point (and could even be veiled racism).

New Yorkers Trump, and Guiliani, could be an examples of "rich men north of Richmond". So he could be anti Trump.
Which could make him Right, Left, or Center. But he could be for Trump which could make him Right, Left, or Center.

And he also makes a sly reference to Jeffery Epstein's crimes- and the elites involved in that scandal- in that line about an "island" (google the lyrics). Clever.

I can see how the welfare references and the like could be taken out of context, considering that a blithering idiot like Margerie Traitor Greene had endorsed the song. What it means is that Greene is too stupid to grasp what the song's really saying. What I got out of it was that desperately poor people need welfare to get by. That Greene could embrace the song while opposing the social safety net and raising the minimum wage says much more about her lack of comprehension of the song writer's intent.

I guess a lot of conservatives find it relatable even though I suppose he writes his songs as a more broadly populist statement.

You can also say that it is even a commentary about the source of the economic issues for why people go on welfare in the first place.

Exactly.

The song is a product of desperate times...when folks are driven to do desperate things like vote for Trump.

When large numbers of people are hurting, they are easily wrangled by narcissistic confidence men who are ready to take advantage of the populace's desperation, whether it be Trump, Hitler, Mussolini, or Bosonara.
