Ok, this is for you SB2, and RobertN you'll mostlikely fall into agrement here too....

I hate Wal-mart, but, like all the rest of the folks in the united states, Im addicted to the low prices. I despise their business practices and how the company treats its employees. But I dont make much money so the prices are luring, and when Im on night shift, its the only game intown open when Im up at 2am.

Anyone else have any input on the veritable evils that the Wal-mart culture holds?

PS I am a captlitist, but business punishing other businesses through shady tactics and threatining to sanction their products isnt what free enterprise is supposed to be.

Where I live Wal-Mart is the only game in town so it's impossible to avoid it AND it's extremely crowded. I hate that you can buy bullets at Wal-Mart. I hate that the salespeople either don't exist or know nothing. Most of all I hate the lighting and the overload of sensory stimulation. I try to get in and get out as quickly as possible.

I despise any business which values profit above its employees and/or its customers. One can see that in employees not receiving company insurance and in the cheap quality of most products these days. Walmart, I'm sure, is as bad as any of them.

The pharmaceutical companies also anger/scare the s**t outta me. Greed which likely will go to any lengths to get what it wants. It's sickening.

I wouldn't mind taking the owners out of just about every HUGE company and horsewhipping them. Top 10% owning 90% of the wealth. French Revolution, anyone?

I hate Walmart and always have but I have shopped there alot in the past because I have six children and live off one income. But, I do not shop there now since I've heard that they are being investigated for knowingly purchasing products made with slave labor! (Yes, I know that many other companies are doing it too) I have boycotted Walmart and find that I really wasn't saving at all because I would walk around in a "zone" (self-protection device to avoid going nuts from the horrible lighting, smells, sounds and people) and end up throwing EVERYTHING into the cart!!

I first would likw to apologise.
this subject i is too good to let pass. Last night after work, i decided to build a home network and messed everything up. Thank god for system restore..

One atta time;

Quote:
Im addicted to the low prices.

This is shortsided reasoning.
Sophist eluded to the fact that they offer no company benefits. With Wal-Mart it goes even further. It has much publicized fact that they teach and encourage their employees how to receive these benefits from the State. While you may be saving 3cents for every dollar you spend, you easily make up that amount in taxes spent.
You are the one taking care of Wal-Marts employees.

Have you ever heard the saying, "You get what you pay for!"?

The only quality product you can buy at Wal-Mart is CRAP; made in China by slave labor.
i have no problem with import/export, since it is my livelihood.
But i also wonder at what cost is the world's largest retailer selling their slave produced crap at such a low price.
-loss of American manufacturing jobs
-increase of service sector jobs
-murder of the friendly 'ma and pop' retailer (the American Dream)
-forced overtime of employees (off the clock)
-bureaucratic like demands on manufacturers
***this forces the manufacturer to look for alternate ways of producing for cheaper; secondary are cheaper produced product, environment concerns, lay-offs, and a muting of the voice of labor.

The reason that Wal-Mart is the only game in town is because it stands alone. They have no competition and this is by design. They have forced out the competition, demanded from the manufacturer, set the example for labor, and dictated to the consumer, where they MUST spend their money.
Wal-mart is the only variable, which has FREEDOM, in any situation that they insinuate their interest; who can compete.

My personal opinion is that by rejecting Wal-Mart i am making a moral decission. Wal-Mart is more interested in their own selfish greed than it is for any concern of any other interrest.

LSE,
the following is a question, try to answer it the best you can.
I warn it is a trick question and it is leading.

"What do they sell at Wal-Mart?"

many of my points were left vague on purpose. there are so many points of evil in this empire that i could write for days. I am hoping to find someone to argue 'pro' Wal-Mart.

My bottom line, and to repeat.
The issue of low prices and rejecting them is a morally correct choice.

Walmart recently infiltrated the UK retail market when they took over ASDA. I like how since that take over all the fruit and veg you buy from ASDA now begins to rot after 2 days regardless of how you store it. Cost cutting? You bet

They sell poor quality products that are made overseas (for the most part) and they bully their suppliers to the point of almost extortionary tactics....

but when you make what I make, you sometimes have to get what you can....

for example, an organic micowave dinner I take to work costs $2.73 at Super Walmart and 4.99 at Publix and Bi-Lo. (the organic health food store they are 5.75) that specific brand is very good, and there are NO others that compare. I try to get Organic foods when I can, so the price of this frozen dinner is ok with my tight budget.
some things I can not get anyplace else, other things, like clothes, I buy on sale in other places.

buzzz
thank you for playing, please try again.

The only thing they sell is space.
Manufacturers sell
consumers purchase
Wal-Mart rents space.

They are simply a middleman,; a place for the manufacturere and the consumer to meet.

You were correct in your strong arm tactics theory.

But i am still left scratching my head, *how can the middleman wield so much power, how can they dictate to the 'real' interrested parties?*

They had some pretty good deals on Harry Potter books for awhile though.

I still shop at Walmart on occasion (their cat food is cheapest), but I don't go very often. The Walmart near my place is crappy. Of course, the KMart which is even nearer is just as crappy. I avoid them if possible, though I still occasionally find myself frequenting either of them.

Ah... isn't it amazing how I'm willing to compromise my morals standards so I can get cheaper cat food? Talking but very little walking, etc. Oh well.
