Do you believe that your life has been already planned out, or is everything happening now and life isn't planned out and it's going at the same rate as us?

I, personally believe that life has already been planned out and life is unfolding the path its been planned at.

Everything which could happen is happening, but not in our dimension, but in two dimensions above what we could grasp.

This reminds me of "The Strange Life of Ivan Osokin" by P.D. Ouspensky.

I don't really agree, simply because it makes everything inevitable - and therefore what's the point in trying? I like to believe that I have choices and can change things for the better, even if I'm only kidding myself.

If you are religious, you believe in fate because "god" knows whats happend in the past, present and future. he knew man would slip up and he knows who goes into heaven and who doesn't. and that he alone is in "control" in wich the individual has a more planned feel to thier life.

if you are not religious you don't necessarily believe in fate.

thats the way i see it

I believe there is free will, and we are given choice.
I also believe along the path of free will there are beautiful fated events in consequence of that free will.

Organized Religion doesn't even necessarily have toe be tied into any of this.

If you believe in fate, you assume that their is no control. If this is what one chooses to believe, it will be true for that individual. You have no power to manifest your own destiny if you believe that you can not. It is all about belief, believe me.

I don't think there's a fate that's sure to happen, but I don't believe in free will either. I believe that everything we do had to happen(genetics, previous experience, context), but there's chance tied up into everything so there isn't a predefined end.

There is a difference between fate and destiny. Fate can be altered, destiny however, can't.

No, I don't believe in fate. I think that the concept of determinism fails when one introduces ideas like chaos and alternate quantum states into the equation.

Nor do I believe in destiny, which implies that one has a single, pre-determined point of arrival.

I do, however see a place for what my ancestors called hamingja -- An accumulation of talents and flaws that's transmitted partially genetically and partially culturally, and reinforced or dissolved by one's own actions. For instance, one side of my family has a flair for research and invention while the other side is artistic. I was fortunate enough to receive the alleles for both these areas, but neither one manifested just by itself. I had to use them in order to activate them.

It's nice to have a talent, a head start towards an area of interest. But even greater satisfaction has come to me by trying things that weren't "fated". Our own actions and desires *are* the control mechanism.

Feel free to jump off the boat at any time though and swim to the nearest island or passing ship. :)

In that case crashing on a boat would be destiny, because no matter what your destined to crash. Something made me wanna get on the boat, right? And I had no knowledge it would crash either.

The simple act of looking left rather than right could avoid the crash. Think about it, if you decide right now to perform some random act such as throwing a peeny across the room, you in fact alter the future of your Universe. If you would have thrown a nickel instead, the future in 10 years from now would be vastly different than if you had utilized the penny. Though I have not yet determined how to incorporate the systemics conciously yet, I believe the sub concious mind may be much better at determining potential outcomes.
