Or does the white house play up the threat to the media so Obama can come out and look like a tough guy with his "drawing a line in the sand" business?

The Syrian government is desperate, so I wouldn't *completely* rule it out.

On the other hand, if they actually *use* Sarin against their own population (really nasty s**t, not as mean as V-series, but nasty nonetheless), then I cannot envision a lot of realistic scenarios where the government isn't swiftly annihilated by some sort of international intervention.

In other words, it would be pure madness to launch a chemical weapons attack against one's own population. *No one* in the Middle East have ever done that!

No they shall not, if only because it makes no military sense.

What makes you think they haven't already?

Have you ever been downwind of one of their villages?

Bashir Assad's daddy Haffaz killed 15,000 Syrians with chemical weapons. Like father, like son. Do not be the least bit surprised by what the Beast Bashir does.

I agree with this, with a hedge bet on "maybe they are that stupid/crazy."

No - VX is a nerve gas but it is part of the "V series" of nerve gasses - X being only one member of the series.

Why? Its not like Obama needs to be re-elected. In any case, so far the threat of chemical weapons isn't being offered up as justification for something pre-emptive. So far it seems only that we might act if it could be verified that chemical weapons are used at some point in the future.

Then I was wrong. Learned something new today.
Thank you for the correction.

I guess the flip side is:

Do you think that Assad would just give up if he decided he cannot win militarily by conventional means?

Also remember that he's not likely to just one day wipe out a 10K people with gas in some city.
More likely he would start out with a few small operations against almost purely military targets (possibly using artillery) to test international reaction.

You use it against massed forces on a battlefield and when you can be certain the winds are favourable and that your troops have means of protection. Otherwise, you're killing your own supporters as well as opponents.

Or at long range when civilian casualties are a non-issue.
