Any thoughts, stories, opinions, conjectures, on the subject? Wikipedia article on Magic and Sorcery

I believe we can affect the world around us through the strength of thought...not a new concept and a fairly popular one, and why not? Thought is energy the same as most other things are energy. I believe people underestimate the degree to which they can control the outcome of things. That is my idea of magick.

I have known people claim to be able to affect the weather with their emotions/thoughts... I do not refute that, although most would view it as delusional. I like to keep myself open to possibilities, but not open enough that I believe everything and anything without question and experience.

I believe in magick, totally, in the sense of this:

Quote:
"The Oneness in All"; based on the fundamental concepts of monism and Non-duality, this philosophy holds that Magic is little more than the application of one's own inherent unity with the Universe. The central idea is that on realizing that the Self is limitless, one may live as such, seeking to preserve the Balance of Nature and live as a servant/extension thereof.

However, I do not believe in the whole spell, talisman, effigy part...you don't need these things for it, but rather just intent and thought, along with a belief that you are capable.

Is this the same thing as Wicca?

Magic is card tricks and top hats and such. Those other things are terms that fat nerdy dudes like to say in between bites of their Hot Pocket sandwiches.

What Graelwyn says makes sense, but there should be a different term for it. "Magick" sounds lame and unprofessional, like a word a guy who rolls d20 to determine Doritos or Funyuns would use.

Tools to help believe enough to actually manage more than you could without them.

Not quite insanity as much as it is a problem that extends from our limited knowledge of the world. People's emotions are dictated by the weather, and not vice-versa. People are animals and we are instinctively more reseptive to change than one thinks. This is all supersition arising from our lack of prospective. But it is up to you to stay in beliefs that were shared by cavemen, and zealots. But it is 8) if you still stay in what I would term recessive thinking.

You mean the people with mystical powers who do fancy stuff? I have not seen anything like that. There does not seem to be scientific basis for something of this nature. Therefore I would lean against something like this existing.

...and it is cool if you remain in a narrow minded way of thinking that does not believe in allowing others their beliefs without feeling some strange need to attempt to insult them in a pseudo intellectual manner  *yawn* how droll.

I believe some things called magick might be scientifically possible through energy flow and energy mechanics, but nothing too supernatural. I do believe thoughts and strong beliefs can have more impact than people think though. Like, you could do spells to make money, gain love/lust, success, you can use the energy to purify or curse, you can use it to gain mental/emotional dominance over people (which I would be strongly against unless done for the right reasons).
But as far as turning sticks to snakes or water to wine, or parting the red sea or walking on water, or making it rain blood from the skies or raising the dead from the graves, that's all hollywood.

Pretty much, magick is scientific, not religious, and it can't perform miracles. Hollywood has people brainwashed as to exactly what magick is, and what it can and can't do.

I would hope no-one would stretch their beliefs to quite that extent actually... Though of course, walking on water could be a very useful skill to have.

I agree with Graelwyn, Calandale & Snake321.

Regarding tools & the ceremonial tradition, i agree that their purely symbolic and not essential, but i found it useful just to read about them (alongside other practices) to gain insights into the energies & metaphysical concepts involved on a deeper level.
