I was seven years old then.

I remember somewhat what happened in Chicago. It was a big riot, and Mayor Richard Daley sent the cops to bushwhack the protesters.

...and some of the gentler protesters put flowers or balloons on the rifles.

As the Mayor himself put it "we did NOT send in the police to create disorder, but to preserve it!"

Nope, but I do know somebody who was a National Guardsman who was activated to police it. --He said that shards of broken glass make for a formidable improvised throwing weapon.

I was there for a day and an evening. Also during the "mop up" after "The Days of Rage."

Actually, earlier in the year, Daley told cops if they saw anyone they thought might be an arsonist, that they were instructed to "...shoot to kill." This is during the time my good friend Bob Dorsey got killed by the pigs.

But "bushwhack" isn't quite right. Everyone already felt they would possibly get their brains beaten out.

At the convention Daley thought his harsh control of political demonstrators would win him popularity with the Democratic Party but they recognized him for the POS he was and refused him entry into the convention. This infuriated the King Pig (once called "The President Maker") so much he turned his police pig's fanaticism up to "do as you will." And they did. This was considered a possible general hazard of political demonstrating so not entirely unexpected....fortunately demonstrators had medics on hand. This was one of the ugliest things I've seen in my life....I could have done without it in my memory.

I had 3 friends hitchhike/bum their way out there in '67. Didn't stay too long actually. Finally, after Denny got his boots stolen, they headed home. Sorry I couldn't paint a "greener" picture for you, but when you have lots of inexperienced people congregating you'll also find lots of thieves (and other ne'er-do wells). They should have gone in '64.

Unfortunately, it spawned Charlie Manson's family.

Actually I doubt you can imagine what it was like at all....unless you've been in a similar situation where you are expecting the nearest cop to come over and beat the teeth out of your face, as I saw done to many young kids there.

In fact I'd suggest you not even try to imagine this. I used to get nightmares. More like "daymares" now.

Bad things? Overall it was a good thing though, thanks to the hype.

No....remember I didn't say Charlie Manson. I said "his family."

He found that he was able to be a "guru" sort of figure, and to branch out amongst the Summer of Love's denizens.
