What Is More Important Science, Sport Or Art?

Obviously science.

My thinking is ....

We value entertainment much more than science or art.

That's why the best sports players make much more money than the best scientists or artists.

So, I say "Sports".

Pablo Escobar made more money than any athlete, rock star, or movie star, or scientist.


So therefore none of the above are as important as...COCAINE!

(I am using LoveNotHate's "logic" ).

But we all know that the world depends upon the WWE

And World Wide Wrestling Entertainment is....well....a combination of all of the above! Sports, art, science (plus a little alchemy), and entertainment!

I say science because we value progress and positive change. Art and sports can bring these about also, but the innovation of scientists saves lives and provides the security we need to have art in the first place. Sports are fundamental to survival and happen in hunting societies no matter what we do, but science has to be supported. Science is often a long slog and isn't going to provide the same immediate gratification if an individual spends a thousand dollars on it, but as a society, we can do better.

Science furthers our standards of living and the capacity of one person's unit of work to go farther.

Visual arts, architecture, botanical gardening, city-scaping, etc. is the fruit of creativity and it creates beauty around us - something that does nourish us in a lot of ways we have yet to quantify.

I actually think sports are a very good thing because it takes a bunch of people who'd be tribally at each other's throats and retrains that reflex to watch a ball either hit, passed/thrown and run, or dribbled up and down a court. I hate to think of how many revolutions we successfully thwarted between welfare money and professional sports on TV.

They're different classes of issue. I think the most abstract here is art, people can have a sense of something either feeding or killing their 'soul' even though they don't know what that is or might not believe in such things. Regardless it seems like our grasp on the impacts of art and music, while deeply felt, has yet to be quantified but I have a feeling that if and when we do find ways to quantify that the effects will be truly eye-opening.


I would say this - if science collapses drudge work increases and our leisure time for art and sport decreases. Similarly if we get some really strong AI and create a whole new canopy of intelligence far exceeding our own we'll be helpless in the realm of science, obsolete really, and all we'll have left is art and sport.

I know that's a non-answer to the title question but I suppose it's really not a question that I'd want to merit as truly meaningful, it's more of an 'if a psychopath had a gun to your head and you could only choose one' scenario and I don't feel like those map to our needs well.

I think they're all important in their own ways, but science is obviously the foundation on which civilization is supported.

Science and Art, at least I think those are more important than sports. I mean I suppose I have never seen much point or entertainment in watching a bunch of guys or girls chase around a ball.

Science definitely provides a means to longer life, but art makes life worth living. I've never been good at sports, so f*ck 'em.
