I have never understood why some atheist have a problem with religion what is it about any religion that agitates them so much? Are they insecure about their faith that their is no god(s), goddess(es), spirits etc. which rule this world? Is it because they are sub-coming to the primal desire for safety by attacking that which they don't fully understand?

In your opinion why are these select few atheist hostile towards religion?

Because whether or not you are a member of that religion, society and all its social diktats are based upon and come from religion. Its the way that religion imposes on everything and everyone else that I particularly despise. Oh and the fact it closes minds.

I have a hard time with the whole concept of organized religion (or organized anything else, for the most part). While it has oft been abused as a way to control the masses or spread bigotry, I realize that can offer a vehicle for people to connect to a tradition. I prefer spirituality, which involves one's personal connection to the world/cosmos/higher power/whatever you want to call it.

I am only bothered when religion interferes with my life.
Knocking at my door with leaflets, planting bombs about, making political decisions, practicing pseudo-science, condemning me for not being a part of it, etc.

Aside from all that, people can do whatever they wish at home or in temples so far as I am concerned.

Unfortunately, although some religious dogmas promote peace and good will, a good many lead to violence, ignorance and irrational hatred. There are real problems in the world that require difficult but necessary solutions if life on Earth is to survive and prosper. To a very large extent the problems that religions create are delusions and are dangerous and unnecessary.

I am disturbed by a lot of the things in some religions. I see them mainly as a tool to control people, which started out as a fine belief, but got twisted by corrupted people so they could have power over others. I have my own system of beliefs, which I'm not going to explain here because it's too complicated and I'm too tired

I am bothered by certain types of religion:

* the ones, which infringe on my freedom to eat pork, marry my SO*, speak my mind and use medical advancements

* the ones, which are stupid. I mean: the people, who do not send their children to a doctor despite being very ill and thus kill or disable them

* the ones, which are evil. Human sacrifice, enough said!

The rest is also something, I do not understand, but it does not bother me all that much. I am libertarian and thus try to respect the right of others to believe whatever they choose to.

Not to hijack this thread but you just `volunteered' (wurdest freiwillig gemeldet) to explain to me what exactly I did wrong, unusually and/or strangely.

Incomming rant that someone will want to shout at me for..

Atheism is right, and I find religious peoples, and their religions, are simply wrong. The things they believe make so sense, nor to they actually bother to explain them. They are simply wrong, and that so many people believe it troubles me. The same I say about ghosts, people who can talk to the dead(What're they called again..), people who claim to be motivated by a god, people who believe in magic, people who follow the social norm without thinking, people who do not question everything told to them, and USA's culture. I could post more, but right now, none come to mind.

I am bothered with organized religion because of how it is about controlling people, and how religious opinion is applied to laws, like abortion for example.
Every pro-life rally I have seen has people holding signs of Jesus, virgin mary, ect and bible quotes. The fact that religion has no proof or logic behind it, means that it should not have any role in the laws that are made.

The 'holy' books of many of these religions don't help either because they don't make any sense, and promote hatred against the non-religious, murder, oppression of women and minorities.

Believing in something that can't be proven to exist is irrational behavior, which is something I despise.

Besides, with so many religions claiming to be the one, true path to God (whose existance can not be proven), how is a rational, reasoning person to choose the "correct" path? Anecdotal evidence? Word-of-mouth? The political clout of its members? Ostentatious displays of wealth and social influence?

"None of the above" - better to disregard all religion and try to advance and enhance one's own station in life than to devote your time to a weekly fashion show and group hug.

well, I could say that their issues against religion is due to social and political attitudes from religion that can affect them, in the US, supposely, there is separation of church and state, I think it could be debatable to say to some degree this could be true.

Sexuality for one, the traditional family values that the republicans praise is based on conservative Christianity, if that is the basis from banning same-sex marriages as well other issues related to sex, no wonder why atheists who happen to be LGBT may despise Christianity, to say one example. How many aspies here despise Scientology for very similar reasons?

Why is it any less irrational to be convinced that something does not exist when it can not be proven not to?

By your own logic, you hang yourself.

If we worked on the assumption that things exist before reasonable proof of their existence is ascertained, then we must believe in everything from chocolate unicorns to invisible sock stealing trolls.

In the absence of ample evidence, it makes sense to assume something does not exist.

*edit*
btw, I am glad to see another Diogenes fan. ;)
