Excerpt:

Quote:
GENEVA (Reuters) - A United Nations forum on Thursday passed a resolution condemning "defamation of religion" as a human rights violation, despite wide concerns that it could be used to justify curbs on free speech in Muslim countries.
...
"It is individuals who have rights, not religions," Ottawa's representative told the body. "Canada believes that to extend (the notion of) defamation beyond its proper scope would jeopardize the fundamental right to freedom of expression, which includes freedom of expression on religious subjects."

Religionists are doing their best to squeeze Islam into the West by any and all means at their disposal.
You are not allowed to disagree with their religion though - it would be discrimination and illegal.

the UN is such a monstrous waste of money. I sort of suspect that they come up with this s**t randomly so that they would seem like an institution that actually does something, when in fact all they are after is fat wages and exploiting other countries resources.

but personally I offend religious views of others daily and still never got into trouble because of that, so I don't intend to suddenly change.

ridiculing stupidity in others should be made obligatory, not outlawed. :P

The problem is that stupidity is usually a characteristic of stupid people and they have stupid reactions which can frequently be dangerous.

Intolerance toward religion is intolerance nonetheless. Religions are often used as propaganda by governments to rationalize their agenda. Materialism is really the source of war and human suffering. War is fought over resources. I don't see any atheists pointing fingers in this direction. Instead they are looking exactly where the propagandists are pointing fingers. If you really care about ending human waste and crimes against humanity, why not give up shopping? Stop driving a car that uses gasoline? Refuse to participate in commercialism?

I found that article to be disgusting. No doubt religious extremists will use that to their fullest possible advantage. Why can’t people just grow up and stop having their little feelings hurt just because somebody doesn’t agree with their religion and speaks out against it?

Because they can't think of a sensible argument to defend their ridiculous beliefs, that's why.

The same could be said about intolerance to fascism, communism, capitalism etc.

intolerance is a bad thing if it is directed towards traits that cannot be helped- like the colour of one's skin, his nationality, sex etc. religious/philosophical views people choose for themselves. if they chose stupidly, it's ok to condemn them.

As someone who feels that any religion is an assault upon the intellect I nevertheless can appreciate that the social relationships in a religious community extend far beyond the core beliefs and religious dogmas; they are intimately entwined in almost every aspect of life and an attack on a religious belief is felt by the person criticized as a deep assault on everything felt important. Most of the actual dogma is filled with the most idiotic conjectures but logic and even decency cannot prevail without some sort of fundamental psychological change and that is almost impossible to bring about. I have tried.

If it’s okay to condemn stupidity, then it is apparently okay for stupidity to strap a bomb on their chest and blow up innocent people. :x
