Capital Punishment is the resulting consequence of committing cold blooded murder. Last I checked, the child is not a murderer, they are innocent.

It is a fetus. And it is as innocent as a rock : Something with no conscience or capability to do actions is not innocent or guilty.

No, it doesn't. The murderer could have already fathered children prior to capture and conviction. Are we really in the business of eugenics via Capital Punishment? If so, their progeny must be put to death or sterilized. Don't misunderstand--I'm not advocating that we actually do that. I'm just saying that if we pursue a line of reasoning that even lightly brushes against eugenics, we are treading dangerous ground and that could potentially justify other eugenics-based activity.

That children of rapists/rape-victims MIGHT potentially have a genetic predisposition to sexual violence shouldn't even enter the conversation. It could turn into an actual slippery slope pattern, not the fallacy, and it just seems way too risky to me.

I see the same kind of thing happening if we justify rape as a sort of "get-out-of-jail-free pass" for abortion. We set up a situation in which anyone could just cry rape and get away with murdering an unwanted baby. Women and young girls need to first have a CLEAR understanding of where babies come from, what behavior is absolutely unacceptable (sexual abuse), and why it is so important to report anything that happens IMMEDIATELY no matter what the perpetrator tries to tell them or how the perp threatens them. We generally assume that young people have no legal standing to give sexual consent, so it's rape regardless. They need to understand that if they do not keep adults informed they are accepting their circumstances and time will quickly run out for a chance to do anything about it.

And by that, I'm not saying I think that makes abortion OK for any reason. I'm just saying that if we as a whole have to accept abortion as an alternative, especially for victims of violent sexual crimes, we need to do a better job of preparing young people how to handle ugly situations should they ever find themselves in them. Heck, we do a better job of informing criminals of their rights than we do peace-loving, law-abiding citizens. Kinda sad, dontcha think?

One other thing we too often miss is lack of compassion for women facing tough choices. Abortion is a polarizing issue because we make it one. Maybe abortion should be illegal. But how are we helping girls and women deal with these physically and emotionally wrenching situations? It's sad that we even have to bring abortion up.

So, I'll check back in another 50 pages and see if anything new has been offerred up.

My view is that abortion should be safe, legal, rare and not an economic issue.
I think that rape, incest and health of the mother should always be considered.
I also believe the earlier the better best if pregnancy is prevented.
If rape has a genetic component is beyond our scope.

Actually to defend the little guy a little bit if I remember right Ina is O.K.ish with early early termination.
so throwing blastula pictures at him is a bit of a strawman.
I think the difference between him and most Americans breaks down to 4 months.
Almost everyone is ok with 1st trimester termination and almost no one is with 3rd.
it turns out that abortion views are not a dichotomy but a continuum.

the question in this topic is:

so the scenario is obvious like this according to some:

1. girl gets raped
2. girl gets pregnant (knowable appr. two weeks after the rape)
3. girl waits until zygote becomes fetus (three to four weeks after sperm and egg joined)
4. girl ponders about religion and abortion (for another few weeks maybe)
5. girl keeps baby… or not…

are you all kidding me???? she needs how many weeks to get rid of an unwanted pregnancy????

to me the scenario goes more like this:

1. girl gets raped
2. girl worries about getting pregnant
3. girl takes immediately the morning-after-pill or equivalent treatment
4. zygote gets terminated (or not)
5. girls (the doctor that is) takes pregnancy test (two to three weeks after rape)
6. girl takes action in case point 4 didn’t work…
7. girl is no longer pregnant

so… what f’ing head??? what f’ing kid?????????

I'm definitely pro-choice, so for me it really depends how far along the girl is.

The thread was derailed into abortion in general. I played an active rule in succeeding at that, my reasons:
- We need a thread for abortion so it doesn't plague the other threads.
- Rape should in my opinion be irrelevant as to whether the woman should have right to abort or not. Women have that right regardless of rape. I think it is harmful to present abortion as a doom-scenario last case resort to be only done in case of rape.




It is more like this:
1. girl gets raped.
2. girl enters emotional lock down because of being raped.
3. girl wonders what the heck to do: Report or not. By the time she decides, already one week is gone
4a. Girl goes through shame and guilt for reporting it.
or
4b. Girl stays in emotional crisis because she didn't report it. Is dead-scared of rapist doing it again.

A month after, she has a painful realization, her period stopped.

Anyway, @morning after pill topic. That's a great idea and of course the solution to this problem. Once I proposed that it should be mandatory to offer this pill the moment you are reporting rape. The pro-life crowd are excessively unhelpful here, because they tend to believe that personhood begins at conception, so they tend to be as opposed to this pill as they are opposed to abortion. Yes, they are stupid and either very clueless about the harm they do or actually evil. But that's another topic.

I'm for retroactive abortions for some people.

I don't think women should be tried for the murder of their children regardless of the age of the child (including adult children).
they brought you into the world they should have the right to take you out of it.
