Oh motl dear, and did you hear the news that's going round?

Your limited exposure is showing. My own, God knows, is limied, but even I know that the organizations and individuals that share the label Evangelical are far from monoliythic - to the extent that some groups like the hypersaintly radio folk near here suspect and fear certain other Evangelicals. Or that every proIsrael Christian is an Evangelical.

The attitudes you mention are found amongst some Evangelicals, but you cannot use them as THE motrivations for a pro-Israel stance. In fact, it might be safer not to assume that every Evanglical is proIsrael.

It is mainstream Christian belief that Jesus is God. But there are some Christian SECTS that deny it: on conservative end you have Jehovah Wittnesses and Christodelphians and on liberal end you have unitarians. From the fact that you consider Catholics to be Christian, I gather you are not a Jehovah Wittness. Are you unitarian by any chance?

By the way, you are raising a valid point. A number of Jews believed in false messiahs, starting from Bar Kohba back in the first century, to Sabatai Zevi in the seventeenth century, all the way to Rabbi Schneerson who just died recently. All of them are welcomed as fellow Jews; yet the Jews who belive in Jesus are not. What makes Christianity "worse" are two things:

a) Belief that the messiah is God, while the other messiahs were not claimed to be God
b) Belief that the observance of Jewish law is no longer necessary

Now, there are sects of Christianity that believes that "Jesus is the messiah but not God" and continue to observe Jewish law. One such sect can be found at www.torahofmessiah.com So how come the Jews who adhere to these sects are treated just as badly as other Christian Jews? Why is Jesus considered "worse" than other messiahs EVEN IF his divinity is rejected and Jewish law is still obeyed?

I think Jews simply hate Jesus, period. I mean, other kinds of idolatry are "okay": for instance, plenty of Jews are into New Age, yoga, and so forth. Atheism is also "okay" even though "I am the lord your God" and "though shall have no gods besides me" are side by side, so why do Jews "punish" the violation of the latter more seriously than the former? Anything "Christian" however is not okay. Even atheist Jews hate their Christian fellow Jews (while atheist non-Jew could care less).

The big change among the Catholics was with Pope John XXIII who changed the catechism. The Baltimore Catechism was a font and well spring for Jew hatred and anti-semitism among Catholics. However a miracle happened. Due to the reforms of John XXIII kids from Catholic schools were much less anti-semitic than previously. In my own day and with my own eyes I saw the Church purge itself of Jew hatred. But soft! The latest pope Benny 16, the Panzerpope will soon change that. I do wish he would say Amen! instead of Sieg Hiel.

Well, at least neither of these two reasons are as offensive as

3. Befriend Jews in order to convert them

which, by the way, also takes place.

By the way, as far as reason number 1 ... if one believes that God is just, then one must SINERELY think that blessing Jews is a just thing to do. If one were to try to get favors from some HUMAN organization by blessing Jews then, of course, that would be a different story. In this case one can say "Jews don't really deserve the blessings, but such and such corrupt organization wants to bless them so let us please that organization". In case of God, they won't be able to say that, unless they are majorly accusing God of injustice. So, in case of God, whatever they say would win favor is, indeed, something they SINCERELY believe in.

As far as the second reason, same thing. Its not like they have to please some HUMAN agency in order to "prepare for rapture". Rather, it is because they feel thats what God wants. Again, since they belive God is just, it means they ALSO believe it is a justice to help Jews. Thus, they must be sincere about it, rapture or not.

You do realize every German Boy in the 1930s-45, was required by law to join the Hitler Youth Movement when the Nazis controlled Germany. The question is how is he as an adult.

You tend to be sane and often right except for being limited to an obsessive materialism.

But when you go off the rails you roll. Any Catholics here caught il ending prayers with Sieg Heil?

[of course I assume that was a typo]

Given the meaning of Sieg Heil it would be of course a not inappropriate ejaculation for a member of the Church Militant in a triumphalist mood, save for its history. But in a strongly liturgical church such a substitution would be discouraged, and most unlikely in the case of one of Benedict's style.

Well most of the people who were raised in the old Soviet Union were "pioneers" (the communist version of Hitlers youth). Myself being one of them, I remember extensive communist propaganda starting right from the first grade. Most of the people believed it. But after the Soviet Union collapsed, no one believed any more what they were taught in schools.

I imagine in Germany it was probably the same thing. In fact, the contrast between then and now might be even more pronounced since Germany's nazism ended in 1945 while Soviet Union continued all the way until 1991. Plus, in Germany the laws were put in place that arrested anyone who continue to hold Nazi views. At the same time, communism has never been criminalized in Russia; there is still communist party there, although it is only popular among the elderly.

So I would say that if the Russian people are not communist any more, Germans are CERTAINLY not pro-Hitler either.

I tend not to throw stuff at you much, mostly because our interests do not overlap that much.

But when you start talking up Christian issues, the probability rises that I will need to step in.

Which on this point I am.

A. If we are to attribute any validity to the gospel accounts - which I assume we do - then motl is quite right, technically the execution was carried out by the Roman colonial administration. But of course, if we attribute validity to the reports, that was a response to pressure from the Sanhedrin.

But can we say "a few corrupt individuals"? Yes, the mobile vulgus will have acted and reacted as the mass of manipulated followers always does. But what need the conspiracy theory? Jesus was - is - a radical nuisance, upsetting the status quo and saying - loudly - and doing - publically - things seen and heard as politically incorrect and blasphemous.

Wherher you are liberal or conservative, you do not need to be corrupt to see someone like that as a danger. Think of Jesus as Sarah Palin and Hilary Clinto rolled into one wandering Jew.

Best to assume - unless you have nmore data that I have seen - that the leaders of the Sanhedrin and others who collaborated were no more corrupt that whichever contemporary political leaders you trust.

But the fact remains, I see no widespread Antisemitism in America, as I doubt Jewish terrorists are going to kill Americans, or that we're going to go to war with Israel anytime soon.

You don't have a target pointed on your tender pink a**. I do. It is easy for you to say, since you are neither a target nor a victim. I still feel some of the lumps given to me by anti-semites when I was a kid. In fact one of the reasons I had to learn how to fight dirty was to defend myself against anti-semites. I wish I had a hundred dollars for every time I was told to my face that I, me, personally killed Christ. I would be rich.

I would advise you not to speak of things whereof you are totally blind as a bat ignorant.

No, I certainly don't have a target on my tender pink ass. I realize that my upbringing must have been considerably different from yours. And for the record, absolutely nobody had the right to accuse you of killing Christ.
But trust me when I say this - - most of us Christians aren't huddling together, trying to think up ways to torment and kill Jews. And if the day ever comes when fanatics want to make Jews disappear, I and most other American gentiles would do something that was not done for Jews anywhere else in the past.

This is exactly why I object and take offense. This attitude that the Jews are defective and culpable for denying Christ will lead eventually to the ghettos and wearing the yellow star. The Jews have kept the faith. They will not worship false gods. And believing that a carpenter boy from Bethlehem is God incarnate is major league blasphemy. If the Christians wish to delude themselves, then they will as they always have. They are misled and what can one expect? That is no excuse for a Jew swallowing this nonsense and blasphemy.

It is better not to believe in any gods than to believe in a false god.

ruveyn

The fact of the matter is though, Jews will never be placed in ghettos or forced to wear yellow stars in America. And that's because most Christians here realize that such behavior is not only reprehensible, but that it also flies in the face of American values of freedom of worship, and the tolerance of difference.
And while I can fully understand that the matter of religion can get peoples panties in a bunch, it should be remembered, attacking someone else' beliefs as "nonsense and blasphemy" is only going to inflame tempers.
By the way, while I am a believing Christian, I can understand how some posts on this thread might have left you a little frayed around the edges. So, I agree people should consider their words before posting - and that includes me, too.

-Bill, otherwise known as Kraichgauer

I am surprised that you are a Christian and you insist that there will be NEVER a persecution in America. At the very least, you have to agree that there WILL be a persecution of Christians by the antichrist. Some non-Christian groups (which might well include Jews) might be thrown in to be persecutted together with Christians. One reason for this might be Jewish refusal to worship antichrist (because it is idolatry) or to take microchip implant (because the Jewish law prohibits putting implants into the body), or the Jewish opposition to peace treaty that antichrist would try to push, and the list goes on and on.

One of the main reasons the Jews were persecutted before (not only by Christians but also by Muslims and communists, let alone pre-Christian times when they suffered under Pharaoh in Egypet and in Babilon) is that they don't "go along with a program". In some cases it is good: they would refuse to worship false gods of babylon or adhere to communism. In other cases it is bad: they refused Christianity. But the bottom line is that it is their character. They have independant minds, whatever it leads to. Thus, their "independant minds" created Christianity and communism and, at the same time, they were too independant to stick with the ideologies they themselves created. Thus, most original christians were Jews, and Jews are also the only people in the Christian nations that refused to accept Christianity. Liewise, Most original communists were Jews, and the biggest opposition to communism also came from the Jews.

It is very likely the same trend might be repeated when antichrist will come. Jews will be the first ones to hail him as their messiah; but then when he will claim to be god himself Jews will quickly turn their backs on him since this will be idolatry. As a result, they might well be prime targets of persecution, even if they will continue to refuse Christianity. After all, antichrist's beef is not just with Christians but with anyone and everyone who refuses to go along with the program. This might well include Jews. I read that there is some evidence that they plan to get rid of 92% of the population that are considered to be "not authentically human" (see http://www.moresureword.com/GAStones.htm ).

Given that antichrist might well pretend to be Christian, this might, in fact, be "Christian persecution of Jews" all over again. In fact, in order for antichrist to deceive Christians, he will HAVE to impersonate Jesus. Since Jews are determined not to accept Jesus, they will reject antichrist the moment he does it. And then, while pretending to be "Jesus" he will persecute Jews for rejecting him on his second comming and then, again pretending to be jesus, also "add" the fact that Jews supposedly crucified him on his first comming.

As a Lutheran and a Mainline Protestant, I don't believe in the Anti-Christ in the sense that Evangelicals do. Rather, we believe biblical references to the Anti-Christ was in fact talking about the Roman emperor Nero. Rather than something in the far future, we believe the persecution of the church already had happened in the 1st century, Roman empire. Christ's kingdom is actually here already - in the hearts and minds of all true believers, who spiritually represent Israel. The thousand year long rule of Christ is actually an indefinite period of time till he returns.
This is something most Mainline Protestants and Catholics believe.

No they are not. They split with the Christians on the issue of Christ's divinity and status as Messiah. They are in a sense Anti-Christians. They are more like the Muslims really though the Muslims see Jesus as prophet, not criminal. The dietary laws, the strict monotheism, and so forth, more like Islam, which is why many Jews in Palestine converted to Islam when it was taken over. It was a natural switch.

Dare one hint there might have been other reasons than naturalness? Note while on the subject the existence long past that date of Christian enclaves in Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Iran, and Jewish enclaves at least in Iraw and Iran.

I am not up on whether Arabophone Christians in Israel / Palestine are continuations from preIslamic days or represent incoming populations. Anyone equipped to help me out?

I'll try to tone down my language from now on if you're so sensitive to it.
And by the way, if I came across as condescending as the "God blesses those who bless Israel" evangelicals I'm so fond of criticizing, I apologize. I suppose I was sort of taken up in the moment.
If, in fact, Antisemites try taking you away to gas or shoot, I promise I'll take my replica Frankish throwing axe, and go down swinging smashing skulls. Hope you find that more reassuring.
