A swim instructor with severe tolerance issues sexually harasses students and that's proof that circumcision is ok.

Jews shouldn't have to. Any religion that impuses such things on its constituencies is ridiculous. In this aspect Judaism is no less ridiculous or extreme than Islam. Rabbis shouldn't have a say on how kids' penises look like.

Current evidence fails to recommend widespread neonatal circumcision for these purposes.

Jews don't hijack commercial flights and crash the planes into tall buildings.

And religious Jews believe God, Himself commanded the rite of circumcision.

By the way, no one is forcing you to follow this practice, so what is your complaint?

The complaint is with forcing this on infants, regardless of what religious background their parents have.

The care of the infant is the business of the parents. Not yours. Butt out. No one is telling you how to treat your children.

So far, there have been no adverse effects from properly carried out neo-natal circumcisions. It is a very safe procedure. Cleaner and safer than body piercing.

Jewish parents tend to care more about their children than do Gentile parents on average. When was the last time you heard of a Jew abandoning his/her child? Most of the people guilty of gross neglect and abuse to children are Gentiles.

I'm not telling them how to raise their children. I'm saying that submitting infants to such an unnecessary procedure is dubious at best and harmfull at worst.

Complications from properly carried out circumcisions do occur. Body piercings are also very clean and safe.

Naturally, as "Gentiles" covers a considerably larger portion of the population, even so Jewish parental negligence is certainly not unheard of.

Not to mention that piercings are generally not conducted on 8 day old infants.

It should also be noted that in "some" jewish communities, the little boy is married young in order to "tie him down" to his religion. I've heard that individuals who leave the jewish community are socially dead, but that they have to do so before there have been marriage arrangements. (Saw a documentary about this a few years ago)

Also ruveyn, it's been said many times, but a child has rights to his own body, not his parents. I'm not against adult males wishing to get circumsized, as it is then an enlightened decision that comes from themselves, not from exterior forces.

If anything, religious communities tend to brainwash their child into some pseudo-authoritarian rule legitimized by dogma and religion. ^.-

The complaint is that, as self-conscious beings, we can reflect on treatments (poor or favorable) being done onto others and wish it (or not) onto our fellows or ourselves. How else do you judge if something is appropriate or not? Or if you would've acted that way instead of the way that other guy did? =/

I see it as an assault on the child in the same way as an ear-piercing would be. But then I'm not Jewish or Muslim.

Let them reach the age of majority and then let the man decide for his or herself if they want to let some surgeon near their penis.

My great-grandmother adopted a Jewish child because he was abandoned by his unmarried mother in order to avoid shame. That's just an anecdote though, which doesn't back anything up. Do you have anything better than an anecdote to back up your point?

Besides, what does the amount that's invested in children have to do with this specific cultural practice? Circumcising your son because tradition tells you to does not equal caring for your children. The Han Chinese are obsessed with sons but they don't circumcise them.

Circumcision is also done in some African tribes as a coming-of-age thing that has nothing to do with Abrahamic religion. They do it to the poor boy when he's 16. It's to test how 'man' he is now that he's come of age (he's not supposed to cry because he's a man now). That's everything to do with fitting in to culture and nothing to do with actually caring about health. Jewish circumcision to me seems just like the bodily mutilations done by tribes from all over the world to show 'belonging'. I reckon the thinking behind it is the same as the thinking behind this:

Which is all well and good. I wouldn't want to ban circumcision. It doesn't make you superior if you practice it, though. I don't even have a penis, let alone an uncircumcised one, and I object to you saying that uncut willies are cheesy and look like dog dongs.

How does a thread on circumcision turn into an Israel/Palestine argument? Stay on topic, please.

Please read the previous posts (by the original poster). Ruveyn has made it clear that his support for circumcision in inseparably related to his ethnocentric dick waving contest. Because of this relation he's said some patently misleading statements and made gross mis-characterizations of various religious-cultural situations, so the record needs to be set straight.

Who else? I liked how I actually learned new things in that history class, unlike in high school.

Are talking about the time period of Vespasian's Judean War?
