I welcome conversation about spiritual and religious matters, but as someone who is neither spiritual or religious my participation in those threads will always consist of questions. People can always try to ignore those who try to reach understanding by questioning claims, but I don't think such threads would be in the spirit of this forum.

People who come here expecting blind approval will be dissapointed and I think rightly so. Discussions without dissenting views will just become disputes about semantics, a result that I don't think appeals to anyone who regularly visits PPR.

I disagree.

I feel persecuted by your disagreement with my views. I demand that you are silenced immediately. ;)

I see from your wink that you know you are being silly.

I made no demand to silence you. I can disagree quite easily without needing to suppress your views.

You are mistaken if you think I am 'demanding' any form of censorship. I can make no such demand

I am expressing my desire (one that is shared by others here) to be able to have certain kinds of conversation on WP unmolested by rudeness, bigotry and irrelevancy.

I can not impose any suppression of materials other than that which is covered in the WP rules.

I can use my words, and leave the choice up to the members of this forum.

If that is 'banning things I don't like', then we live on different planets.

You are mistaken if you think I want to eliminate dissension and debate. I don't think you've really understood what I've posted at all.

I'm looking for a middle ground. We don't have to think of everything in terms of pure black or pure white.

The metaphor is fine. This particular subforum is about politics, philosophy and religion. Most conversations within this subforum have nothing to do with asperger's. Most of the regulars here don't even use the parts of the site for talking about asperger's.

This whole thread can be summed up with a question and an answer between one party and the other.

The question is: Why can't religious people have a conversation about religion or some aspect of religion without it turning into yet another atheist vs. the religious thread?

And the answers seem to be mainly along these lines: because we don't want to let you have that and why should we?

i think you are correct in this. a person can see it all over the board... if someone starts a thread entitled "Post Here if You Love Playing XBOX", a pack of people are going to come into the thread saying things like, "XBOX sucks. i only play Playstation games," or, "i think video games are a stupid waste of time."

i do not know if this is an aspect of WP or an aspect of all online forums.

lets make an echo chamber forum where you can only comment in a thread if your views are in harmony with the OP.

No. Then Mankind would never have developed the Slinky. Or written Mad magazine. Or thought of the Happy Meal movie tie-in with the Machete.

This forum was created to help those with as and make those that dont feel welcome to voice their opinion on other places due to fear of being ridiculed because of their odd speech pattern/tone/... feel welcome to voice their opinion here.

Can any of you explain me how does attacking each other fit on the description I gave above?.

Sure forums are bound to have dissenting views but is there need to attack anyone that disagrees with you?. Lets see most of you claim that the other party is irrational, a rational response to an irrational person is an attempt to try to explain things again perhaps with more adequate wording to see if the other party understands better.

Attacking anyone that disagrees with you puts you below their level of rationality because it shows that you cant have a proper rational discussion without feeling the need to attack those with dissenting views.

well put and i agree completely but that isnt really all that is to it,

define an attack?
disagreement?

if not what you said adds little to actual debate of who are allowed to post where.
as others have said the only real way of limiting your participants are asking nicely upfront, at least i wont comment there.

I'm more oriented towards personal truths than 'fundamental' ones.

I don't really believe in fundamental truths. I do not think there is a 'correct' view of reality. Some views are just more fashionable than others, gain more traction and followers for a while, then they dissolve and something else comes in.

All this about atheists being silenced is just silly. Do you really think you haven't had a chance to air your views? When virtually every thread started regarding any aspect of religion is turned into a personal soap box for you to announce your rational superiority? It's a pointless argument. You can't prove the existence of God. Some people rely on their faith. It gives them direction and comfort. So what's it to you?

I'm using the editorial "you" there, not singling anyone out.

When claims about reality are made that are simply wrong expect to be corrected, this is the internet and more apt this is an aspie forum. Personal stories about how your faith helped you get through an ordeal generally don't belong in PPR unless you want your experiences to be disected, you'll have more luck in the Members forum and to be clear I don't agree with drive-by "your beliefs suck!" posts.

His objection has a point though. Without some notion of standards, literally anything goes. The KKK would have as much right as the NAACP, and so all that matters is who shouts the loudest. Even if we dispense with a claim to knowledge of objectivity, it is still clear in our subjective perceptions that certain arguments seem not to fly and others work quite well, and that certain actions have good and expected results with high probability and others do not.

And if there is no truth or anything that your words can be stated to mean, then what do these signs "black", "white" or anything else point to?

So, why should I treat your view as correct? If your view is wrong and obviously wrong, then how can I take it seriously? Have a dialogue with it? There need to be logical elaborations here, otherwise all that exists is fuzziness and your position disappears in a puff of logic.
