As a matter of fact, it's standard practice to terminate dogs out of fear that they may attack the agents. So it's not like the evil, evil feds decided that day that they'd make a pre-pubecent boy cry by killing his dog. The fact remains, the kid had shot at the agents. Yes, it's tragic and even terrible that he died, but the agents were defending themselves.

I doubt the Weaves were up to date on current procedures for handling suspect’s dogs nor where they up to date on the fact that feds were present. I thought I’d already stated that clearly enough but I guess not.

I'm sorry if I come across as callous on this subject; that was never my intention. But the fact of the matter is, this sort of thing doesn't happen to ordinary, sane individuals. Yes, Randy Weaver had the right to be insane, but it was that very insanity that had created the situation that led to the loss of his wife and son.

Nutters or not it’s not like they were a terrorist cell. In a nutshell it’s not okey-dokey to go after someone’s family for their off the wall political and religious beliefs under the cloak of petty weapons charges and skipping a bogus hearing.
Keep in mind that there are people on the extreme left or suspected terrorists that could find themselves in a similar situation.

No one had ever said they were a terrorist cell. Rather, there was the very real fear that they were dangerous white supremacists - which they were. Weaver's neighbors, who he had threatened, maintained he was raising his son to be a Neo-Nazi soldier.

Not to defend the Weavers (my impression is that they were genuinely dangerous), but I can't think of anything more likely to make me want to kill someone than them shooting my dog. I'm a pretty reasonable person, I think, and would invite agents into my house for coffee and a polite discussion -even let them search for weapons (or whatever), if they promised to put everything back when they were done - but if they killed or hurt my dog, I would lose my cool in a rather explosive manner.
Once that happened, the Weavers probably took it as proof that the feds were violent and sadistic (regardless of their actual motives), and that fighting back was the best way to keep themselves alive and whole.

Has anyone else seen this story?

This isn't a liberal slant on something. It is based on simple facts of how many people died in car crashes in each state compared to which states voted for Romney or Obama. Pretty weird. Incredibly one-sided. Guess who is more likely to die in a car crash, a conservative or a liberal?

Red State / Blue State comparison of fatal traffic accidents

This is actually pretty easy to explain: red states are overwhelmingly poorer than blue states, meaning that the cars that people drive are older and lack the revolutionary safety measures that modern vehicles possess. I've seen a dramatic decline in gory accident victims coming into my (Californian) ED in the last decade; a student of mine at the dojo recently walked away from a freeway-speed accident where his car wrapped itself around a redwood, because it had airbags. This, despite the fact that he wasn't wearing a seatbelt! (I chewed him out for that). If you can't afford to buy a new car, you're missing out on more than snazzy paint and styling.

Conservatives don't even want cars that have seat belts.

Hmmmm
I always wear my seatbelts so I must not be a REAL conservative.

Well, maybe I make up for it because both of my vehicles are gas guzzlers.
:D

That is weird. You'd think blue states would have higher fatalities simply because they have larger populations, and thus have more potential fatalities on the road.

I own and drive a '63 Plymouth, Valiant, and one of the very first things I did twenty years ago when I first bought the car was have seat belts installed.

This is 2012.
No one drives a '63 anything, including a valiant, except to a classic car show.

Smart. Last time I checked..:

Seatbelt = Smart.
Seatbelt, Air Bag = Very Smart
No Air Bag, no Seatbelt = Stupid
Air Bag, no Seatbelt = Very Stupid.

8O. You're lucky that James Bond is a fictional character... The Aston Martin DB5 is from 1963...
