Yet those same Nordic Scandinavians have a common ethnic, linguistic, and cultural origin as other northern peoples as Germanics and Anglo-Saxons. They all had shared very much the same Pre-Christian mythology.
My point is White american protestant is not the same thing as scandinavian....even if there are people of more Scandinavian decent within that group. White American protestant does not really reflect actual nordic culture or roots of it.
Oh, it's not just white Protestant, but Anglo-Saxon, too. And in more recent times, I think Non-Protestants have come to be included in that classification too.

I thought the abbreviation stood for 'white american protestant, can't remember what the S is for.....but yeah I certainly do not want to be grouped together with a group who's ideology I have nothing in common with, just because of having the same skin color. How can a non protestant be classified as one?

WASP is a term that lost its literal meaning a while ago, now it basically just means middle class and above or religious white people that aren't Jews. I've heard Rick Santorum called a WASP and he is neither Anglo-Saxon or Protestant. WASP is basically the pretext to term white privilege, its used the same way by the same people in pejorative fashion. WASP and white privilege are the racial slur they claim don't exist. They can explain it from a academic standpoint and raise legitimate points about certain issues but check tumblr and or Salon on how they're using those terms.

It stands for "White Anglo Saxon Protestant".
Americans of Northwest European Estraction from the Teutonic (Germanic speaking) parts of Europe that also happened to mostly Prostestant. In other words "non-hypenated Americans". As opposed to other groups, even from European extraction, who were still hyphenated in the Sixties: like Italian Americans, Greek Americans, Poish- Americans, etc.
It doesnt matter whether the person is religous or not. The term includes the whole gamut from fervent fundie Evangelical Protestants to athiests. It just means coming from the White bread north european Protestant flavored culture- regardless of whether you go to church or not.
Or thats what it meant in the Sixties.
These would be: English/British (but not Catholic Irish),Scandanavian, German, Dutch, and Swiss ancestry.
Would not include Italian Americans. Spanish speakers (either from Spain or from the New World), because those groups or both Latin in language and Latin in religious culture ( ie catholic). Nor does it include the Slavic extraction folks from eastern europe (usually either mostly catholic, or mostly eastern orthodox), nor Greeks. Just northwest europe.
But nowadays it gets applied loosely to any White person who isn't Hispanic.
But even in the original Sixties meaning you, Sweetleaf (desite having some Native American blood), would be essentially WASP because you are mostly (from what I gather) of north european nordic/germanic extraction. So am I. So is Kraishgauer.
Its like being Italian American. Its got nothing to do with your actual religous beliefs, nor how you vote. The "Protestant" part is just part of the culturalethnic
package the person comes from.

Ah that's what it means, now I remember.
However it so happens I have nordic, specifically Scandinavian roots on my dads side...and I believe german, irish and british on my moms side. But I reject the destruction Christianity did to these cultures who were initially pagan, so thus I'd never want to be referred to as a WASP . Why should I be associated with any kind of christian dominated culture when I reject it? Just like I don't think someone should be associated with thug culture and bad rap music if they're black(not a perfect analogy) but point is it appears white people can also be unfairly categorized whether they like it or not just like it says happens to minorities. Also not too happy about what the protestant settlers did to distant native relatives, beings I have that native blood as well.
Instead of just shoving everyone into catagories they don't fit based on skin color, why can't the term mean what it actually states?

Sometimes the burden of representation is proudly shouldered, even celebrated. But more often this burden of representation becomes a dangerous, racist weight, crushing and unbearable.
^from the article^
I guess he sees white male neurotypicality and health, etc. to be the standard against which others are judged. And further that this is just the way it is - the more you deviate, the harder you have to work.
I don't know if I agree with this as everyone brings their own challenges along with them. And like has been said, there are subcategories of undesirable white men - douchebag, etc. But I think with all the integration and cultural blending that is going on we'll all be a caramel mocha colour soon and this stuff won't matter.
Also, did anyone get to the part about Lysol being sold as a feminine hygiene product!
