At least we can be sure we have enough nukes to kill any of the smallish asteroids which head our way.
I really wish the U.S. had implemented star wars though, although it would have likely ended up abused.
Not sure about how effective nuking asteroids would be. They're traveling at extreme speeds and are either quite dense or simply amalgamated piles of rubble, or a combination. So if you blew it apart the debris would likely still not be redirected, and might even reshape itself in due time. If it is a pile of rubble, nukes might not be very effective either
But space is definitely where nukes aught to go, preferably in an Orion-style nuclear rocket project or just shot into the sun, along with the rest of the nuclear waste we have accumulated. A peaceful use of otherwise useless nuclear stockpiles
It might actually be simpler to reflect focused sun-light from a gigantic mirror onto the surface of an asteroid, allowing CO2 or water to outgas as the rock is heated. This would create a natural rocket, in a way, that would redirect the asteroid.
I also think Star Wars could have been abused, if the US had felt inclined they could deny space to the rest of the world by preventing rocket launches from any nation. The US likely wouldn't have done that, but other nations would have had to have built their own 'Star Wars' style system and thus a space cold war begins... Though I suppose one could argue there is one ongoing
