At least we can be sure we have enough nukes to kill any of the smallish asteroids which head our way.

I really wish the U.S. had implemented star wars though, although it would have likely ended up abused.

Not sure about how effective nuking asteroids would be. They're traveling at extreme speeds and are either quite dense or simply amalgamated piles of rubble, or a combination. So if you blew it apart the debris would likely still not be redirected, and might even reshape itself in due time. If it is a pile of rubble, nukes might not be very effective either

But space is definitely where nukes aught to go, preferably in an Orion-style nuclear rocket project or just shot into the sun, along with the rest of the nuclear waste we have accumulated. A peaceful use of otherwise useless nuclear stockpiles

It might actually be simpler to reflect focused sun-light from a gigantic mirror onto the surface of an asteroid, allowing CO2 or water to outgas as the rock is heated. This would create a natural rocket, in a way, that would redirect the asteroid.

I also think Star Wars could have been abused, if the US had felt inclined they could deny space to the rest of the world by preventing rocket launches from any nation. The US likely wouldn't have done that, but other nations would have had to have built their own 'Star Wars' style system and thus a space cold war begins... Though I suppose one could argue there is one ongoing

just Compare Mao Communist China and today laisse-faire ultra-capitalist China

yet another false dichotomy. What a surprise.

Economic -3.25
Social 0.1

Seems about right, I am a social moderate and economically left of centre, in fact I am a member of the Labour Party.

There are sh*t holes in capitalist countries. And people sleeping under bridges and on park benches.

Even in Canada there are homeless people on the street. I was in Toronto back in 2001 and I was shocked to see people begging for "loonies" on the street. I never expected to see that in Canada.

What's not prosperous about a freer economy?

Why were you shocked? I grew up in some rough parts of TO and it's nothing new.

I am a Yank and to a certain extent I bought into the propaganda that paints Canada as a sweet wonderful progressive country with little of the poverty due to inequality. I was mistaken.

Yep looks like our country isn't all aboot living in Igloos and never having to worry aboot starving eh? There's plenty of moose to go around for everyone

It definitely doesn't help when we have clowns like Michael Moore taking a shot of some condo or co-op housing in Windsor and saying "This is how ghettoes in Canada look like".

i find the whole capitalism vs. socialism debate to be flawed,
the best results are always a combination of the two, so why constrain oneself by entertaining the idea of the two as seperate entities?
