There is more to human rights than holding elections.

Pakistan has a lot of military coups, and political exiles. They do get change but it is hardly a typical democracy, also the tribal regions aren't consistent with Islamic democracy, they have undemocratic courts and shura .

in this case, though, i wasn't responding to the question of whether or not islam provides better human rights, but rather, Eric's claim that power lies in the hand of just a few mullahs in a shariah state... and in this case, it isn't. and Pakistan is just one country, you ought to look at other countries, like Iran, for instance, or Sudan.

Unfortunately, the other caliphs weren't elected like that.

An interesting question: who was actually eligible to vote? It's true that the Western countries had property ownership requirements until the early 19th century.
oh, i'm not sure....

and besides, you shouldn't look at what it is in PRACTICE.... the question was which religion has better human rights IN THEORY

Iran isn't the best example, because it has an unelected supreme council and supreme leader, which can intervene. It also have forces that are answerable only to the supreme council

Sudan human right record is not good, so free an fail elections are a pipe dream there.

The best examples are in southeast Asia not Africa or Middle East.

You have done it yourself, you aren't providing theoretical examples but real ones.

We should judge on practice. Is if a system is good that should be met out in the results.

Fine, forget the real examples I mentioned.... but that doesn't change the question at hand... which religion IN THEORY has better human rights.... Islam, or Judaism?

If theory does not match the facts, then the theory is invalid and must be discarded.

Neither of them are better. Israel is supposed to be secular, but depending who you talk to is a Jewish Theocratic State. Halakha is not really a good system.

Israel would be more democratic, except for the fact, it govern areas under questionable jurisdiction (overlapping jurisdiction for settlers)

Also as I understand it there can only be one Jewish state. Although some do try operate Jewish family courts in other countries like some Muslims do. However these are quasi-Judicial and illegal.

so you're saying that in settlements they practice halakha?

There are so many different denominations of different religions religions that it's hard to say. I think in general more liberal religions have more human rights, at least for women.

As I understand Halakha is partially integrated in Isreali law.

The differnce between Sharia and Halakha, is Sharia is intended to be a complete legal system. Halakha governs certain conduct.

The settlements, are under kind a proxy Jurisdiction of Israel, inside another Jurisdiction.

Why limit the choices to just Islam and Judaism?

Political agenda of men for men ... End of story no better than the kkk ! Violence and oppression is never of any holy thing that is of men and evil of men only ! GREED AND ARROGANCE PERIOD. The reason Christians don't recall violent versus in the bible because it doesn't get taught very often because they don't want zealots to run out and rape and kill and enslave and steal and lie in the name of religion! And sorry when DNA evidence in rape cases is declared unislamic and the want of four witnesses for a rape to be proven did I say no DNA? IT IS FULLY UNDERSTOOD WHAT THESE VIOLENT MEN WANT THAT USE RAPE AS A MEANS OF OPPRESSION AND SHARIA AS A MEANS TO CONTROL ALL PEOPLE AND THAT IS FOR FINANCIAL GAIN .
