Well, when you support skinheads and racists what do you expect?

Yes yes this is a burden I deal with. In america all germans viewed as evil. We can't even show our pride in our heritage with out being called a nazi or a aryan skin head.

WHich is why I never talk about it.

Depends on the context, I think. I do know that Americans used to get ripped off something criminal in the Republic (some of it was their own fault, though) - so much so that many stopped going.

Foreigners of all nationalities get ripped off in the Republic, due to the perception that they are easy targets. It's nothing personal against Americans - Irish thieves and scammers are equal opportunists.

The United Kingdom was the first country to abolish slavery. The British abolished slavery in the entire British Empire in 1807; it took the Americans until 1865 to remove that piece of law. Racist laws and segregation continued right up until the 1960s in the United States. We in the UK have not had similar racist laws like that, although I'll grant you there was discrimination in Ireland.

Haiti declared independence in 1804 and abolished slavery. :P

Point taken, but the thrust of my argument stands.

Sorry, I just wiki'd it and found even earlier abolitions. Like the Persian empire in 550 BC (thanks to Zoroaster).

Not for lack of US intervention in their politics, it would seem.

Just because they were abolished then doesn't necessarily mean that the abolitions weren't repealed later.

Of course. I just don't know where you got the whole 'first state abolish slavery' thing from.

How has the U.S. caused Haiti to be one of the most badly governed republics in the Caribbean. We never sent troops there.

And Unite Fruit Company Inc. was never big in Haiti.

I really just hope that a UI can happen. Or at least they could try to make it happen.
