I did not say this unique to Americans. In the English speaking world this seems to follow a familiar pattern, although America has the honour of actually voting in a populist leader with zero crudentials like Trump.
I would not make distinctions based on language since many places are experiencing similar patterns. Distinctions based on species make more sense in my opinion. This thread primarily concerns Homo sapiens.

Populist leaders are not unique to the US. Notorious leaders are not unique to the US.

I read a cross section of English language news so I think its symptomatic of the neo-liberal English speaking world. I have Danish and Swedish cousins who think Americans are very ignorant and have no idea of geography (which is likely right since they think they are the centre of the world). This is not surprising as most non-English Europeans are bilingual and many are multilingual so make it their business to be worldly/global.

I can’t say that I think America is the center of the world since I’m particularly fascinated by other cultures. I speak French and Spanish.

Ultimately, it doesn’t really matter what Danish and Swedish cousins think or what our confirmation bias leads us to believe. What matters is what the research actually says. Some people base their views on America on its dumbest citizens which isn’t fair or logical in my opinion.

There are ignorant people in every country. America could certainly work on furthering literacy by improving its educational systems and changing various policies for sure but so can many other countries in the world.

What I have noticed is that unlike when I grew up unless it directly effects us our media in general either ignores news in other countries or gives them the short shrift. It makes business sense because most people care much more about what is happening locally than thousands of miles away.

From what I see unless the media emphasizes it most Americans not only do not pay much attention to other countries, they are oblivious to how much people in other countries pay attention to and care about what is happening here. Even myself who follows the news closely get taken aback by foreigners who know more about our politics then I do.

^ Good point. I think the media mostly only focuses on other countries when they could pose a threat due to their size, power, and poor relations with the US. Perhaps other countries are so interested in American politics specifically because of its perceived power.

The US might be more interested in Europe in general if they weren’t so far away.

Have you always lived in Canada, Isabella?

For some reason last year, when I was last active on the forum before a long break, I thought you were from the UK.

Stupidity is a kind of intellectual stubbornness.  A stupid person has access to all the information necessary to make an appropriate judgment, to come up with a set of reasonable and justified beliefs and yet fails to do so.  The evidence is staring them right in the face but it makes no difference whatsoever.  They believe what they want to believe.  Not only do they have no good reasons for thinking that what they believe is true -- there are often good reasons for thinking that what they believe is false -- but they are not acting in a rational manner.

(In comparison, fundamentalists make up 10-15% of the Canadian population, depending on the survey. https://theconversation.com/canadas-mar ... ght-121024)

Even though things are improving, that’s still a lot of Americans who reject evolution. If they reject overwhelming evidence here, they may be more inclined to be suspicious of or reject other forms of research/evidence. Critical thought may also be a problem, making people anti-education in general.

My former religious cult discourages members from pursuing higher education (which is reflected in the numbers I posted previously) and engages in logical fallacies/baseless claims in their publications constantly. People are led to believe that their publications are the best sources of information out there, besides the Bible.

Many people have gone to and supported the Creation “Museum” to be taught indoctrinated to believe that the Earth has only been around for 6,000 years and that people coexisted with dinosaurs.

No I haven't always lived in Canada.
I've lived in three countries.

The Groomer decided I was in UK during our friendship, because it made him horny.
He spread that around WP as being fact.

The other idiot who wrote porn about me tried to doxx where I live.
I crafted it so that they doxxed the wrong information.

I am British but I don't share my location online.

I may be moving to Devon, though.
