There is a difference between reading something and agreeing with what is written.

The facts remain that religion does help people on an individual level, helps them cope with the vast, cold, unforgiving, uncompromising universe whether there is a God or not. That's the way many humans work.
Could you cope with the information that everything is futile in the end? Wouldn't you want to escape from that and be happy?

Wow, what a great argument.

Futile? How many billion people are on this planet? Our species has certainly survived, which is the reason we are here; perpetuation of the species. I wouldn't call our lives futile.

Escape? There, in a word, is the explanation for religion. Stupid, weak people need something and someone to follow, so they don't have to think for themselves.

Unforgiving et al? Please don't personify the Universe. That's the kind of thing that leads to religion and eventually belief in god(s).

Your argument that religion and/or belief in god(s) makes people feel good could also apply to Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, etc. But we give that up eventually, when we grow up!

I find it quite interesting that fake Christians have noticeably less tact than real ones do. How often do you hear Ragtime or JohnnyBGood saying things like "you disgusting sinner"? It just isn't done, we want to see you saved - NOT call you names.

No, that's the whole point in nominal religion. Sure there's a leap of faith we all have to make, but it's better to build bridges to make the leap a little less far out.

You do realize you've excluded dozens of religions that believe in god by your stated Nazi-ish criteria.

Well, gee I was kinda hoping to have a group of people who believe in God with a capital "G" only in this thread. Looks like as soon as I ask for that, everyone else shows up. They're welcome as much as Sopho or Hadron.
