I'm off for the day, but just came across all these replies and have to say that although some of us are clashing horns, this is possibly one of the best conversations I've ever had!

I look forward to getting home and continuing it!

i've seen a negative, pessimistic partern with atheists.
starting with not accepting that everything created has a creator, althought their beloved science says so.

funny how people with no science background are always telling scientists that 'science says this...,' or 'science says that...'

And it's funny how many seem to think that science is a dogma, ideology, or religion of some kind. I think part of this is from schools teaching science as received wisdom instead of an ever-evolving entity, causing people now days to consider scientists as a modern-day priesthood. Another part is from religious people (both of traditional and New Age varieties) afraid that science will disprove their fairy tales.

Science says nothing of the sort.

They're not "fairy tales". They're myths, s'il vous plait. There's a difference. "Fairy tales" is another one of those emotionally charged terms that leeks into any and every decent discussion involving strong atheists. All it does is show prejudicial disdain for the opposing side.

I agree with this. People tend to demonize what they feel threatens their beliefs.

Yes, and this is a trend found on every level of our existence. What we believe forms our identity, we don't just believe in a god, or democracy, or socialism, or capitalism, or the Republican party or whatever else, but rather we are those things. Our minds enslave themselves to these concepts as a zealot does to his deity, perhaps even in bondage to the point where life outside of these concepts seems impossible and shocks and perturbs or even destroys those who leave them.

Very interesting. I have found that individuals (myself included) cannot help but integrate themselves into what they value. People can't see things for what they are, they must make it part of themselves.
