But I have to agree the current pope is mishandling the PR on this one, and many church leaders before him made poor decisions.

Remember that the church is not it's leaders, and it should not be solely defined by it's many mistakes.

And will the leaders basically change? Not likely. It's not a PR problem its a basic moral problem and that's a fundamental problem not to be lightly brushed away.

Seconded. The Vatican is giving
all Catholics a bad name, claiming
city bishops/archbishops have responsibility
over priests, not the Vatican.

I'm Catholic too and agree The Vatican
is screwing up on this round of sex scandals.
Either hierarchy doesn't care or is taking

No, because the primary difference between the forms of Protestantism and Catholicism is the rejection of Papal authority. Remove that, and you have a form of Protestantism. To doctrinally mutilate into Islam, rejection of Christ's death on the Cross and His Divinity are additional prerequisites to that type of change. So, no.

How many doctrinal alterations are required to jump from Catholicism to Mormonism? Is the only doctrinal difference between Mormons and Catholics the rejection of Papal authority?

It depends, of course, on how pissed off the Catholics can get. Since the pedophilia has been apparent for years and it's their own kids who have been damaged, apparently Catholics will do anything to preserve their system.

That's not true. The bishops are responsible to manage their (arch)diocese. The Vatican is responsible to determine correct church teacing on faith and morals, but when it comes down to the administrative stuff, it's up to the bishops. That's why we have them. After 2002, cases of sex abuse are to go straight to the Vatican, but prior to that, it was all handled at the level of the local bishop.

A bishop does not have nor has ever had the authority to defrock a priest. Furthermore, there have been bishops themselves accused of sex abuse. Who then is responsible for them? Another bishop?

That is not the point I'm making. The Vatican can't defrock a priest either if they are not made aware of the problem by the bishop.

Except they largely are aware of it. Read the news a little. See arch bishops, cardinals and popes names on papers. In some cases, they knew about it forty years ago.

Answer me this: what was a 70 year old arch bishop likely doing 40 years ago? Being a priest. There are bishops and arch bishops who were directly involved, as priests, in the residential schools, in the sex scandals. Somehow it is escaping you that bad people were advanced in the church and now you expect them to tattle on priests having the same fun that they did? Seems a little bit unlikely, doesnt it?

Have a look at this article. The only logical conclusion is that there is still more laundry to be aired. They are hiding something still, something they know they will lose money over.

Quote:
A bill in Connecticut's legislature that would remove the statute of limitations on child sexual abuse cases has sparked a fervent response from the state's Roman Catholic bishops, who released a letter to parishioners Saturday imploring them to oppose the measure.

Under current Connecticut law, sexual abuse victims have 30 years past their 18th birthday to file a lawsuit. The proposed change to the law would rescind that statute of limitations.

The proposed change to the law would put "all Church institutions, including your parish, at risk," says the letter, which was signed by Connecticut's three Roman Catholic bishops.

In years past the way the local bishops handled the case of priests who molested children was to ship them off to another parish where they could do it all over again. This was brought out when the scandal of priestly sex abuse was made public in the Boston area. When the matter leaked out to the public at large that was rage, upset and law suits. The Church has paid out hundreds of millions of dollars in damages to people who were molested when they were young. Some priests were exposed publicly , arrested, convicted and sent to prison. One troublesome priest Father Goeghan was sent to Walpole Prison in Massachusetts where he was killed by another inmate. Apparently child molesters are not well tolerated in prison by the other prisoners.

They felt the Bible should remain in Latin, so that if the common person wanted to read the "word of God" then they would have to go to a Church since Latin was not taught to most people, nor were Bibles commonplace.
