Is it just me, or could you not say something like this to a Christian about their beliefs? FYI, I for one intend to take good care of this life, for it is precious whether or not there have been or ever will be any others.
You've not been reading the threads! Ruveyn is famous for saying this kind of thing to us Christians all the time.
Personally, my views are from a part scientist, part hobbyist standpoint. I believe there are forces unexplained, to at least some small degree, and I approach many metaphysical ideas from a reasonably skeptical viewpoint. I understand that I may be wasting my time, and do try to keep keenly aware of solid evidence against anything I'm looking at for the moment. I don't worry about it though, because many people have hobbies that may amount to nothing. Some of them are far less interesting too.
I also am fairly convinced as yet that everyone has capacities for things considered to be "supernatural" in common society, and that telepathic communication and clairvoyance simply occur naturally to very small extents in everyone, getting more extreme in some other cases, and that this can also be trained to match the same degree as the self-professedly unique and mystical "psychics", whom are simply prodigies of the talent (when they are not simply con-artists, which is rare)..

It is easy to grab onto such beliefs... people have done so for a long long time. Many of them are far more unrealistic than what you're talking about too.
But we have to caution ourselves, lest we fall into the same trap that has ensnared the people of the past, created systems of rigourous control on our daily lives... I am not quite sure what your talking about here but i want to understand. I am not quite sure what your referring to. so if you could explain it better i would greatly appreciate it. Okay, i'll try to explain what i'm saying another way.. hopefully more concisely.
You yourself said in your most recent post that you were looking for a way to help you understand the world better, a method for seeing the whole picture perhaps is a good way to say it.
You also said that you believe that there is something beyond physics.. ie, something non-physical.
I too, as are many others, looking the same as you, for that way to see the world, the method to help bring all we know together with all we don't know yet. A way to make sense of the whole.. of the big picture.
I will say I disagree with you on the something beyond physics... Rather what i will say is that I believe that there is something that physics has not yet figured out, and perhaps has not even created a system which is capable of explaining it.... Yet. But everything is explainable by physics, up until the point where it is so small that measuring it changes it. (simplified I know, but all that's needed here)
Back to the point though... the problem is when we start looking for this way to see the whole picture, we start looking at this religion, that belief system, another spirituality, etc. We start to examine the different beliefs or tenets of those systems, and when we do look at them, we see similarities to our lives... But we don't always see the variations.
Okay, example might work better...
A lot of people believe in Karma (or Kismet, or "what goes around comes around")
Most days, something good happens to us.
But, when we do something real nice for someone, we are more attuned to noticing when those good things happen back to us... Especially if we WANT to believe in Karma.
And those that want to, are far to quick to write off the $100 traffic ticket, and give credit for finding the $20 bill on the ground to being reward for being nice.
I've done it myself... we all do, it feels nice to be rewarded... and rewarded by more than just a "thank you"
Biologically speaking, all altruistic behavior in humans, and other animals is simply a by-product of reciprocal altruism. Even if it has become more... it's biological underpinnings are based on the hope of re-payment.
Now.. I know there are versions of Karma that do hold logical validity... If you do something nice, you're more apt to feel good about it, thus more apt to present a positive attitude outwards... Those presenting a positive attitude are more likely to be treated nice by other people.
Anyways... we see the hits... and ignore the misses. This happens when we think of the beliefs of a "religious system"
Okay, you have memories from "the past" one's you cannot place into your physical life time.
They seem almost non-human memories, as if you were something else (as in your belief, an elf)
You find a website, and WOW, it jives all together, i could've been an elf in a previous life, and that's why I have these memories.
What were just vague memories that you coudln't quite put all together into one pile and specify before, now are all starting to take shape in your head... The problem is that that shape is now being contoured to fit what you just read.
Those memories, I suspect are childhood dreams.. maybe even recent dreams. I suspect those dreams came out of a deep seated desire to "escape" something. You mentioned abuse... I don't want to pry into things, or open up a can of worms that has been successfully closed. but perhaps in your dreams you were "someone else" someone who didn't have to live through that abuse.. I've had those dreams myself... many many many nights...
Sometimes those dreams could manifest as you being something other than human... maybe if you are an aspie, or have aspie-like symptoms, you want to escape the human race. Maybe your "differentness" wouldn't be so bad if you were say the elves you read about in Tolkein, or AD&D or some other novel. Maybe you liked the description of that race in one particular book, because one or more things said about that race fit more with what you want out of your neighbors, lovers, family etc. than what is true about humans.
Most fantasy writers do depict elves as very human-ish... BUT they are more aloof, more stoic, definitely stubborn (not as much as dwarves mind you)
Do you see my drift, how a vague memory, that you can't even put a finger on, can grow into a seemly real, detailed memory that you could SWEAR really did happen. But as you know it didn't... you have to fill in the blank.. It must've been a past life.
If it was a dream that occurred while you were in a state called Hypnagogia (basically that halfway state between sleep and being awake) Then those dreams can seem more real... Though just like other dreams they might not be recalled... at least until some point in time where the memory is cued.
I don't know if this is true of all/most aspies.. but i have the ability to put myself into and out of Hypnagogia at will... and even when not trying... like when talking to someone.
I see images, shapes, colours stuff like that when in that state... when i slip into/out of it without trying... I usually only walk away with a vague impression that i was "thinking about or envisioning something" as opposed to what it was.
I've tried to make this example directly relevant to the direct question, but i could just as easily sit here and show you how this or that from your past could easily make you grab onto Islam, Christianity, Buddhism etc.
The more open and receptive you are when reading about something the more likely this is...
When you're a cynic and a skeptic like myself and ruveyn you aren't as likely to make those connections.. and quite possibly you'd be more apt to miss REAL connections, if they were there.
I will risk the later ere the former though.

I know you're not, I could from my own reply be called far far far more "preachy" than your OP.
As I said, my fear when i see new unfounded beliefs such as this, is that children will suffer as a result.
Be it from direct preaching by the parents, or just as inimical, from the parents talking about this and that as though they were true. The child then takes that information as a fact, because before a certain age, human biology is such that the child has 100% trust in their parents, by nature... specifically a hormone called oxytocin,
dramatization from my religious background.... mother says to father... "Well, those two homosexuals will surely rot in hell for their sins" or "Did you hear so and so's daughter married a non-catholic? Can you imagine that... And they're actually going to let it happen!! !! That heathen boy will corrupt her soul, no doubt. Could well turn her into a damned atheist."

I find that unforgivable.
I'll take what you said to one step harder and colder...
Society invests in it's children.
Society has a right to expect that investment to be paid back.
Belief in a non-existent concept, entity, etc... detracts from time that could constructively be spent to bettering society, or even oneself (which in turn benefits society)
That is why in much more social based societies (well, social based either in reality or in principle) There is much more need to make sure that the individuals remain a part of the state/nation.
Ie... Soviet Russia would not (generally) allow emigration.. even gave it a different name, defecting.
There was too much investment put into the child... they had to pay back that investment to society.
...At least in theory... And it's a theory that I wholeheartedly agree with.
What accomplishes more? Sitting in church for an hour each Sunday (or each day) or going out and working with the poor, picking up garbage, helping build a public park, etc etc etc ... for an hour each week?
Even if a god existed, he/she/it would have to be pretty vain and insecure to prefer the church to the community service.
No wonder religion was essentially illegal in Russia. No wonder Marx condemned it.
It is a leach feeding on the ass of society. And although leaches may have their use, as a whole they are a parasite... and there are dozens of alternatives for anything positive a leach can do.... Just as with religion.

I tend to see the variations which is why i cannot find a religion i fit neatly into. I do however tend to make up other explanations to explain this. using your example of karma. i find i am not always rewarded by it or justly punished. but i believe it catches up with you eventually, if not in this life then the after life or the next life. weather this is me trying to rationalize flaws in that system or simply finding a better explanation i dont know.

I LOL'd at the dwarf joke.
It wasn't a dream or a memory it actually came to me in a vision.
It could have been about escape. I actually needed to escape so bad i had a breakdown and when crazy for a while. The abuse definitely makes me more open to believe but i still try to look at things logically and at a distance when deciding whether it is a valid belief or not.
And despite it all i find some of my beliefs cannot be shaken. i have never faulted in believing in god or the after life. i just feel this since of absolution in it all. i am not sure about much in life but i find i am so sure about that.

well i see your drift, but it wasn't really a memory it was a vision, and i haven't had much info on it since those first few visions. i never elaborated on it or made it more then it was. i am still not 100% sure i was an elf but that this the only thing that matches up so well. but my hair was covering my ears so i cannot be sure.
oh! i just remembered another thing that happened that leads me to believe i was an elf. i black out one time and apparently i started talking another language. my god mother witnessed this event. there were a few people in the room when it happened and when i came back to myself they were all staring at me shocked with there mouths hanging open. I dont remember what happened and never will because i was blacked out.( BTW there was no drinking involved in the event i just black out a lot for reasons unknown)
but she originally thought it was Klingon because i was watching star trek at the time it happened. i had her listen to some sound clips over the phone, i didn't tell her what each was. i told her to tell me when she heard the language i was speaking. she pointed out the elvish one. the critic in me says i could have learned it in a black out and not rememberd learning it. but i find this unlikely. it was a weird event none the less. so not only do i have visions of a past life i apparently black out and start talking in that language.

Though I was raised Christian (and remain so in spirit), I am quite familiar with the occult, new age material, and the like (my aunt is Wicca, etc). I identify with angels, though I wouldn't say I am one, but I could be wrong. I have also consistently dreamed I was somebody else. My aunt claims it to be past life regression, but there is nothing to be proven of it. I am not complaining as this 'past life' is quite pleasant. I do know however, that if I ever meet a woman with the same face as the heroine of this dream that I will ask her out immediately.
I have definite feelings, at times, of being a jackass and it even comes about that people see me as such but the theory seems doubtful to me.

This is horizontal memetic transmission at it's worst.
however at it's best, it just as quickly eliminates the self-same problems that it itself creates... PLUS the even worse one that mega-generations of only vertical memetic transmission created.
Any crap can become urban legend... because we communicate with hundreds/thousands/millions of people.
But the crap-ness of it all becomes something that itself too becomes communicated with hundreds/thousands/millions of people.
At the same time we're hearing about the tourist in jamaica who's hotel room was broken into when nothing was left behind (save for the disposable camera) Hence the thief had to leave empty handed, and upon return home, they developed the film to see their toothbrushes up the thief's ass, we are sitting here on forums like this, discussing the illogical nature of Christianity and it's outdated belief system that no longer serves the good of the people it was once created to help.
The good goes with the bad... but as outdated beliefs will die in the wake of this... So too will errant new beliefs. They may persist for a few years, and have their own damage trails, even death tolls, but the net balance will be for the better, so long as the better means the truth.

Looking for answers in the "other" isn't so much an alternative to looking for it in physics.
Instead it is an attempt to bypass a necessary step in seeking the knowledge you look for.

Humans seek answers to understand the complex environment they live in. These lead to more, and more complex questions. The alternative to this lies in belief systems tailored to circumvent this process, thereby breaking the mind free from endless, ever more challenging inquiry, but at the same time stranding them at a distance from truly understanding the universe, commonly in circular reasoning.
