Ok the world is only 5000 years old.

The flood happened after the Tower of Babel and the only people who survived are Noah and his family.

When did that happen? 4000 years ago? 3000 years ago?

So how come we have black people and white people and eskimos and Australian aborigines and Chinese?

How come there are thousands of languages with no words in common?

So Noah's family spread out from the Middle East, changed size and color and totally changed their language in only 3000 years?

Yeah, right.

Floods happen all the time. I went through a pretty devastating one, myself. But there's no such thing as a flood that would cover all the earth. Even if the icecaps melted, there'd still be land.

Noah let the animals off the ark. How the polar bears, penguins and kangaroos got home is beyond me.

Anyway after 40 days underwater there wouldn't be any grass so what did the deer eat?

More to the point what did the lions, tigers and wolves eat?

It would take years for the two deer, moose, springboks, goats to build up a decent size herd but the lions, tigers etc are going to need to feed every couple of days.

So the carnivores would have eaten the prey in the first few weeks and then starved to death.

And yet people BELIEVE this nonsense?

All excellent points. It couldn't have possibly been a world-wide flood. What DeaconBlues mentioned sounds very plausible - from the standpoint of the people in that area though who knew no other place, hadn't been to New York or Sydney, knew no other animals than what they had around, how would they explain it? I don't think that this argues for or against the bible's authenticity more than just saying that certain events likely did happen and it could have likely been one of a few geological events. Its interesting as well that the seven plagues of the Exodus and even the temporary land bridge have been explained (theoretically) by the explosion of Santorini.

I did catch a show once, I must have been no more than ten or so at the time, where they talked about the notion that a great deal of the current Earth's water was held in the crust and at a certain point the region currently the rift in the center of the Atlantic Ocean, spewed out a geyser of water 23 miles high and continued in such a way that brought a world with much less overall water (likely much more freshwater) to being what it is today. I'd be curious to see if they were ever able to figure out a time frame for that (if it hasn't been debunked as a dead theory) - I really doubt it was 5,000 years ago, seems way too recent.

The Bible records the animals were plant eaters before the flood, as were humans. Only after the Flood did God allow carnivorous traits to emerge.
That's because the stupid flood killed off all the meaty plants.

I think the flood was way back when the plates were all stuck together in Pangaea. A meteor hit the earth and cracked the super continent into all of the plates we see today. Part of that breakup caused the flood. Humans had to leave the place we evolved in and started wandering around the world. That explains all of the creation myths. The dinosaurs died later from another meteor.

By the way, if you read the bible with a straight translation from Latin or Hebrew, the stories have different meanings than the bible as interpreted by the priests of King James,

But to get back to the original topic, obviously the entire Earth was covered with water because the Bible says so. To doubt that is to doubt the Bible and you know what that means.

I do detect sarcasm, but it is still a good jumping point for my opinion.

One can believe in the Bible as the Word of God while not believing that it is a completely accurate recorded history. To understand that God wanted the readers to understand the lessons rather than worry about the accuracy of the facts.

I grew up understanding that the flood was an instructive story, and was actually surprised to find out that the story was probably based on a real flood that seemed "world wide" to those who lived through it at the time. The later is what scientists have apparently concluded, that there was a large flood in the region. How many pairs of animals that were boarded is left up to our own interpretation.

Pangaea was a long time (~250MYa) before humans (~2MYa). Tectonic plates move all the time. Any impetus provided by an impact would be very small (as thousands of miles across, hundred mile deep lumps of molten rock measure things) and rapidly lost by friction.

Much more recently but still long before humans there was a bloody big flood when the Mediterranean filled.

Two major floodings which have occurred while humans have been around to remember are the flooding of the Black Sea and North Sea.

Neither of which was the World Wide Flood. There is not enough water in our atmosphere to rain down a world covering flood.

I believe in it because of fossil fuel.

Are you suggesting a certain group of humans cannot give birth to another color of human?

Actually, Ambivalence, if you mean "humans" as in Homo sapiens sapiens, it's more like circa 50 kiloyears ago. 2 megayears will get you back to, IIRC, Australopithecus, which were hominid, but not really "human" as such.

And no, there were no hominids around during the last supercontinent. And no, there is no evidence to support the idea that water was "trapped in the crust" and came spurting out as a 23-mile-high "geyser" from the Atlantic rift - that's the sort of pseudoscientific crap tossed out by people who deeply need to believe that the Christian Bible is an accurate account of history in the modern sense, rather than being more along the lines of Kipling's "Just So" stories (a series of morality tales intended to inform correct behavior).

I am suggesting that it will not occur as a spontaneous mutation in a large population, occurring in a span of less than 4000 years, that will subsequently breed true throughout the entire population (unless you have evidence of a group of blue-eyed blonds native to central Africa for at least that long, or a similar group of brown-skinned people with thick, curly hair in the Far East...).

This once again circles back to accusing God of being a liar - He would have had to have planted all this evidence pointing toward modern genetic study, and all the evidence of Earth being four billion years old or so, and all this lack of evidence of a worldwide Flood four thousand years ago, to "test our faith". I choose to believe that God did not lie, but that people are fully capable of misinterpreting what He has told them.

Of course they can. All life has very similar DNA. A good part of human DNA is like banana DNA so when the flood dried up. instead of Noah's family having babies they had bananas. After that, it was a simple matter to give birth to black, yellow and red people. Obviously the purple, blue and green ones died out.

If Jesus could produce lots of fishes and wine from water, why doubt that God could produce as much water as He wanted? He could have drowned the world in Coca Cola if he wanted to.

As said earlier, was ten. I put that out there more as a question than a fact - thanks for the clarification at least. I really doubted, even such an event had happened, that it fit anywhere in biblical time tables (or Pangea for that matter - its been a few hundred million years).

I am now starting to believe the abionic theory of oil. That it is created deep under the earth and has nothing to do with ancient swamps.

As for humans giving birth to children with very different DNA, that is impossible.

An Australian politician got into trouble years ago by saying "Two Wongs don't make a White"

If you are white and your white wife gave birth to a black baby are you going to accept it or are you going to get very angry?

It would be an amusing conversation to spectate, especially if she argued that she wasn't cheating - it was evolution. More butter for the popcorn.

Yeah, right.

I've read that at the time of Christ the world had about 140 million people; and that about 2,000 years later (in 1999) the United Nations had the world's population at 6 billion. I think that these numbers confirm that today's population curve started about 4,000 to 5,000 years ago, which I believe is one of the things that adds weight to the reality of the global flood. (I've also read that if man had been on the earth for 1 million years, the world's population's today would be 1 trillion 500 billion people.)

There is no physical evidence of a Global Flood. There is much physical evidence that the earth is over 4 billion (with a B) years old. The story in Genesis taken literally contradicts large amounts of physical evidence. In short, it is nonsense. Genesis, with regard to the creation of the earth (and the cosmos) is a book of myths and fairy tales. It is not factually and literally true. It is a collection of tales told by pre-scientific bronze age dudes.
