Wow I thought I was the only one who wanted to move to Sweden. 8O

FYI I'm getting so sick and tired of being tagged a socialist/communist by the right hand conservatives and the religious bs that's up in storms. I'd rather live in a country where a person is at least given a chance to both work and be able to live in conditions better suited than the ones we've got.

I'm not necessarily convinced of that auntblabby. Many working class and "blue collar" people I know are bigger supporters of supply-side economics than Milton Friedman ever was. The fictional Archie Bunker character wasn't too much of an exaggeration when it comes to many of these people.

Just because people may like having a union job doesn't mean they like the unions supporting the democrats' policies. My dad is a truck driver and he is almost as far right as me. Most of the other truck rivers and even dispatchers are very right wing too and would never approve of wealth redistribution.

Can I assume, then, that you're against the Welfare Program and any other sort of government assistance, and you think that everyone on any of those programs (including all of the autistic people and Aspies on those programs) should just have to starve to death, since they're unable to actually provide for themselves and many of them don't have family members or friends who could afford to provide for them? Seriously, stop pretending that wealth redistribution is always a bad thing, and that it's not helping anyone at all. (Oh, and by the way, your greed and selfishness are appalling. The fact that you'd rather have more money than have that money go towards helping people who need it is seriously sick and twisted. Do you have any empathy at all for others?)

Well quiet_dove, to be fair to John_Browning....it's not as if Truck Drivers are usually making $250,000 per year or even anything close to that. J_B is likely making even less than his dad, so i'd say they can only afford to be so generous.

Thus....if wealth re-distribution means taking substantial amounts of money away from hard-working people who probably aren't making much more than three times (if that) as much as most of the poorest Americans, I really don't see how that's fair.

I'd rather bleed the real fat cats like Donald Trump and Bill Gates. And while we're at it....we can cut defense spending since our current level represents little more than a taxpayer give-away to the defense industry and the Wall Street parasites. We could also cease this futile and costly "war on drugs" and other vices like prostitution. Maybe we ought to consider taxing religious institutions too. Screw the pope and his gaudy little summer residence at Castel Gandolfo. It's about time these religious leaders starting putting their money where their mouths are and living a bit closer to how their god-man did. IOW...there are better ways of re-distributing wealth than taking it from those who are aren't living the life of Riley themselves.

That is because the Swedish model looks good on paper. Most Americans would go batsh*t crazy actually living under the Swedish system. Americans are a silly happy go lucky people who are selfish and short sighted in their innermost being. They would soon come to despise the collectivism of the Swedish system.

I currently live in Sweden. Been here 3 years now. Trust me, Sweden is absolutely fantastic at giving the impression of being utopia. The reality is very, very different. I'm working on my escape tunnel.

Try Pimsleur it's very efficient and I used it exactly for Swedish (become fairly fluent in about a year).

Long time no see, MotherKnowsBest, I left after 5 years. Did you really had enough or just need to vent?

No, I meant it. Moving back is not as easy as moving here, especially now the recession is biting. My husband works in the university sector and jobs in his field are becoming harder and harder to find because of all the cuts. He's looking and applying for anything suitable, plus he's looking into doing a PGCE as a paid placement as he can't take a year off work. I'm currently studying with the Open University (my escape tunnel). As soon as an opportunity comes up, I'm gone. (I might even take him with me  )

Ouch, sorry it went so bad for you. Good luck with finding your way home soon.

Personally, I think that every country (including Sweden) has its downfalls and its shortcomings, and we just have to learn to live with that fact, instead of complaining and planning to move whenever things get a bit rough. There is no such thing as perfection or utopia, so why not just learn to live with that fact?

What's your point? Me, her and anybody who actually live there can tell you plenty of Brits and Americans swear it's heaven on earth.

That's true. I think it depends very much on the person. It's the sort of place that you either love or hate. I think all those who hate it eventually leave so you end up with a country of people who all think it's heaven on earth, hence why that impression is given out. I have a friend here in the same town as me who came at the same time as me. She is totally into it and will never leave. But all the things she loves are the things that now drive me insane.

And for the record, Swedish meatballs are not all that.

This is what truly blows my mind about the blue collar folks. Why are they so inclined to consistantly vote against their own best interests? The right-wing politicians have been so successful at selling their agenda to those without significant wealth and power in order to keep the money and power at the top. They like to use scare tactics and catch phrases like "jobs-killer" and "hurts small business" and my personal favorite "trickle down econimics." It's all a bunch of crap and the blue collar folks eat it right up.

Take the current debate over the Bush era tax cuts expiration. The Dems want to continue to cut taxes for all monies made under 250k only. The Repubs want to extend the tax cuts for the rich. Who's really going to pay for this proposed stimulus for the rich? Why on earth would any sensible person believe that a stimulus for the wealthy (who are already doing quite well these days) is the answer to our current economic problems? Because they bought the lies sold to them about "building small business." It's nothing more than big business reaching into your pocket and taking your cash. The lower and middle class will pay for these continued tax cuts to the rich as they always do.
