You're talking about the same religion that we all know, yes? That is Islam, the religion that has adherents that have expressed homicidal intent to those who do not believe, who happen to depict their prophet, or destroy a copy of their holy book? Somehow, this seems a lot less tolerant than Christianity.

I believe there is a bit of difference between western Islam and middle-east Islam, no?

Possibly, and it could just be that I am just very very ignorant of the distinctions. Honestly, my interaction with Islam is pretty slight.

Yeah, but you're knowledgeable enough to know it's the same as Marxism and Catholicism  . That's good enough for evangelical Christians!

There are many fault lines in Islam.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Divisions_of_Islam

When it comes to Muslims in North America, I tend to think at least Muslism who immigrate to Canada from overseas tend to be more liberal than the Islamic norm. Hell, the Canadian Muslim Congress wanted to ban the burqa while the Canadian Secular Alliance did not.

Canadian Muslims may be more liberal, but there is a strong contingent of hard-right Muslims in America. (Strong obviously being relative to our total Muslim population, not relative to the whole US)

I think it might have something to do with the fact that a lot of Canadian Muslims are very well educated professional class immigrants (even though they end up driving taxis thanks to unfair practices by various professional associations) whereas a lot of immigrants to the US tend to be working class or working poor Muslims who tend to be more culturally conservative.

Islam has its own codes and rites to conform to.

If they ever became a political majority you will see Sharia substituted for civil law. Until then, they are no danger to your liberty and mine.

It isn't THE SAME! Rather, Catholicism INVENTED Islam. I mean, gee whiz, I thought you would know this. You need to read more Jack Chick.

Islam came into being without any help from the Roman Catholic Church. It started in Arabia and expanded from there. However, the Crusades started by the management of the RC Church managed to make relations between Muslims and Christians difficult, to say the least. The Militant Muslims still think they are living back in the 12-th century (by the Christian calendar). Meanwhile the West has become so secular and they cannot conceive of a way of life totally government by religious rules. Not any more.

The Shi'ites are the hardest case. In addition to being anti-West anti-Christian and still believing that the Crusades are happening still, they are also fighting a battle over who will succeed Mohamed (pus and blisters upon him) and they are still grieving over what happened at Karbala 1400 years ago. These people have completely lost track of time.

As an atheist, I don't think religions are worth the trouble, but if you feel Islam is the right choice for you, go for it. As it was pointed before, many people (mainly christians) will be wary of you, but pay them no heed. Jerry Falwell (crazy intolerant bastard) and Guy Fawkes (terrorist) were also christian, while Stalin (evil overlord) was atheist. On the other hand, Muhammad ibn Mūsā al-Khwārizmī (father of algebra and algorithms) was a muslim.
What I'm trying to say is: there are good and bad people in every religion. Don't let the few religious nutjobs who get far too much time on mainstream media cloud your judgement.

We're refering to a satrical attack ad Awesomelyglorious wrote during the "Most Strident Atheist" contest in which, to make matters interesting, I had decided to start backing Dent publically to make the race interesting (as nobody was campaigning against AG).

http://www.wrongplanet.net/postt128298.html

AG based the "Islam is spawned by Catholicism" spiel on the basis of a cartoon by true scholar (I mean that sarcastically) Jack Chick.

I have a slight interest in Islam, but I don't believe I've ever met any Muslims. My experiences with Christians are unsatisfactory.

Hello all, I used to be a non-denomintional christian until last year. In church, many so-called "Christians" would make fun of me and bully, and especially make fun of my aspergers-induced quirks and idiosyncracies. I found this to be the case at EVERY church I went to. I blelieve this is because Christianity does not tolerate any kind of deviance from the norm. I mean when you look at the bible and read all of its silly morals and laws, its basically anti-aspergers, anti-nonconformist, pro-neurotypical, pro-conformist propaganda. It didn't matter if I was in a catholic church, a othodox synagogue or whatever... every Xtian place of worship was full of serious people who did not appreciate it my dark sense of humur and penchant for satire...

But then I started reading about Islam and it seemed like a much more accepting relgioun. I started going to Masjid ("mosque", to you heathens) and it was so much more welcoming than any chrurch i have ever been too... I felt like all us Muslims there were one big family, and actually, in Allahs eyes, we are. Nobody made a big deal about me being an aspie, or being a satirist... i went to at least 3 mosques in my area, and my experienc was the same at each one. I also found other muslim aspies who have reported the same opinions, they're all happier as Muslims! i think have found the best religion not just for myself but for all Apsergians and all mankind. What do you think? Do you all think that Islam is the best faith for Aspies? Do you think that maybe it was just the Christians in my area that were stuck up and stupid, or is xtianity in general just a dum and close-minded religion?

I don't know about your area, but here most muslims tend to be immigrants from muslim countries. Aspies who visit countries other than their own as foreigners are generally treated better than they are in their home countries, due to the fact that people in general don't make fun of foreigners since they know that they don't know enough of the foreign culture to make a judgement.

Islam is highly intolerant of homo- and bisexuality (I know that lesbianism was pretty much accepted in the Abbasid caliphate though), and is also intolerant of other religions. The very word "Islam" means submission. All abrahamic religions are patriarchal, intolerant and highly sexist and xenophobic.

I'm really tired of everyone blaming our relationship with muslims on the crusades. aren't we forgetting a certain general Abdul Rahman Al Ghafiqi who invaded Spain and Portugal with the intent of storming across all of europe and wiping out Christianity altogether centuries before the crusades, until we was finally stopped in France by Charles "the hammer" Martel and his army at the battle of tours? (Also would have made a much better movie than 300)remember that? or did your history class not consider that important?

To the OP: I'm not sure which Bible you read. The one I read had a lot in it about not judging others, and not caring when people make fun of you, and that's it's good to be a social outcast, and about how everyone has their gifts and all gifts are important, and about how everyone has their own individual moral code to follow that's just as right as everyone else's and so on and so forth, It is the polar opposite of "conformist propaganda".

You may be tired, but Muslim extremists never stop referring to the Christian West as Crusaders, and this is about 600 t0 700 years after the last Crusade. The Shi'ites still mourn the death of Ali, the Prophet's nephew or grandson (I forget which) after 1300 years. You may think it is silly (as I do) but the Muslim extremists have a very long memory and a reluctance to let bygones be bygones.

Hmmm... I guess I misinterpreted what you meant when referring to the crusades. In light of this, I apologize for the pointedness of my last post.
