They charge for land, and they charge for land to deal with the value of land in its various uses, as well as the need to construct living space. You aren't charged for land if you own a home, but home-ownership is very expensive. Rent is for people who don't want to pay for all of those costs, but the basic economic framework is similar.

It's wrong that people are forced to live so far away from work. And why? It's because of speculators.

Because there is a limited quantity of it and people's desire for it exceeds the existing amount.

$630 for a single bed is absurd if you're gonna be charging $750 or so for a two bed.

/wishes I could get a roommate and go into a two bed arrangement and save some $$$

That's ridiculous. They say the cost of living in Florida is bad and I always stick to the cheap areas. 2 bedroom / 1 bathroom $500 + utilities. 1 room, no bathroom, no living room, no windows, electricity included $250 a month.

I know a motel that charges like $430 a month even

That's a studio. Most studios around here still run a good $550 or so.

Well....our landlord broke into our place and stole our laptop lol so that's why that place was cheap, oh and he headbutted me in the face too. He worked illegally as an uninsured expired-license contractor. He claims he's killed a guy, he pulled a knife on my one of our roommates, made $1,000,000 in 2004 during the hurricanes and spent it all and never reported any of it to the government or paid taxes on it. Overall, one shady mofo.

I am not sure. Square-footage per person goes down with a two-bed, I think.

It does but not really. Shared space in the common areas is the thing. I dunno if you've ever lived in such a living situation before but it's not really a legitimate loss of space in any day-to-day measurable way.
