I believe it was mary todd lincoln. But I agree with you on every point.

By the way: we have had one bachelor president who who most historians agree probably was gay, and that was Buchanan ( the guy just before Lincoln). His sister served as first lady.


Technically, I believe it would be Mary Ann Todd Lincoln (Todd being her maiden name). IIrc, she went by 'Ann' or 'Annie.'

President's wives? What do they have to do with anything?

Best to leave well alone. Do you want to see statues of Tricky Dicky or George dubya Bush or Barko Barmey?

I'm guessing you've never been to the Black Hills to see Mt. Rushmore in person. There's already a Crazy Horse Memorial under construction not too far from Mt. Rushmore. Since it's not funded by the U.S. government, it's been under construction since 1948. It's larger in scale, and if it's ever completed it will be the world's largest sculpture.

As for who was chosen for Mt. Rushmore itself-- that was all up to the artist, Gutzon Borglum. He was the one who proposed the idea of a sculpture of four presidents; his only mandate from the government was Coolidge's insistence that, in addition to Washington, there should be two Republicans and one Democrat. Borglum chose presidents who he believed embodied the shaping of the U.S. into the country it became: Jefferson because of the Louisiana Purchase, Lincoln because of the Civil War, and Roosevelt because of the establishment of National Parks.
