I like this quote on the subject by Chesterton

'Fairy tales are more than true — not because they tell us dragons exist, but because they tell us dragons can be beaten'.

This is good. Although it'd be awesome if dragons really did exist. =( -sigh- What a boring reality, where i have to make due with human complexity to get my intellectual highs.

how does one innoculate kids against the fear of monsters in the first place, before the monsters even appear?

Some children never fear the monsters, so why borrow trouble and risk creating the fear in the process? Deal with what comes as it comes, and use Sally the Monster to teach your child to do the same.

when i was in single digits i feared a giant brain monster hiding beneath the foot of my bed, that was going to suck my brains out through the pores of my feet. i coulda used some "anti-monster spray" then. impressionable children need to be protected from scary late-night movies.

I got the idea about monsters from seeing glimpses of monster movies on tv.
