That's been the most ironic thing in US history. A group that is against communism due to it having a big government which degenerated into tyranny, yet the group itself using the government to silence the opposition. The HUAC is in fact the polar opposite of apple pie.

I don't think another HUAC is gonna happen anytime soon though...

Everyone forgot these obvious facts when 9/11 happened.

Sounds like someone has been reading Glenn Greenwald... And I wholly approve. Everyone should be reading his column over on Salon, it's really horrifying just how out of control the USG has gotten, and the continuing Wikileaks saga is just one of the more visible signs of it, with Greenwald being it's chief cataloger at the moment.

If anyone wants to know what Glenn Greenwald is writing about.

it was always a simple matter of time before "information wants to be free" turned to "information prevents freedom."

the problem is with our perceptions and our unwillingness to change them. governments perceive information to be a tool as well as a weapon. they perceive their citizenry in the same way. we consent to this perception even while we object.

proxies were comforting when i was a paranoid teenager. they're much less reliable, as a method of defensive anonymity, against governments than they are when it comes to hiding from script-kiddies.

how many unmasked faces do we see in heated protest demonstrations now that cameras (and people who pay attention to them) are perceived to be more prevalent?

this kind of event, internet companies being compelled to divulge information considered, by the users on whom the information is gathered, to be private or secure, is quite common. every few months we all remember and get pissed, then we get distracted and forget about it until it comes up again in another few months.

what will we do when we finally admit that, not only are we already cybernetic organisms by virtue of our interconnection through and to our high-tech prosthetic communication and data sharing organs, but that we are already pretending to be subservient to artificial constructs.

wikileaks is a natural response to the contradiction of information control in an age of information freedom. information gathering efforts by those that feel threatened by the phenomenon were and are to be expected. acknowledgment of these efforts will likely be more important, in the end, than the resistance that prompted the acknowledgment.

the future is and always has been, freedom through informed cooperation. the present is and always has been the future past.

Paypal has now stopped accepting donations for the Bradley Manning defense support.

Bradley Manning is still locked in 23 hour isolation, banned from any kind of exercise (to the point where he'd be forcibly stopped if he tried isometrics in his tiny cell), and is being harassed into making a false confession and accusation with regards to the leak that has caused his nearly year of torture now.

Twitter should quite frankly sue over a 4th Amendment violation and say that Obama's Justice Department is on a fishing expedition.

Uh isn't the Republican House of Representatives doing a bunch of cost cutting such as defunding net neutrality (net censorship), wouldn't take much for them to defund whatever organization that tries to pull a stunt like that (likely the FCC).

Actually Canadians have less rights than people in the United States.

That's some great freedom of speech you have there, America. Well done for being the Land of the Free.

Wanna go after over a million people? Go ahead. They all live in different countries anyway, and though you may be able to get their details regardless, you won't be able to do anything with them.

The US has had no qualms with international kidnapping of 'enemies' in the past..
