My theory: To put the fear of God into us. To make us realize how easy we have it living under Grace instead of Law. In OT times, people worked their tails off for the

possible salvation. Nowadays, all we have to do is confess that Christ is the Lord of our life, and we are guaranteed salvation.
Also, the OT gives a framework of how we
should strive to live, the NT tells us that Christ broke the shackles, that we would not be held accountable to the law, He did that for us already.
But the OP's argument is that we should ignore the OT's violent parts ad/or not take them seriously. If we don't take them seriously, why would we have to have fear of God?.
