Jayzus, Mary and Joseph! That sounds almost sensible.

It's not really, Irish Nationalists don't just live in the the South and British extremists don't just live in the North, there wouldn't be a problem if that was the case. The North ie 'Britain' is almost 50% mixed.

The people of Northern Ireland will remain part of the UK until a referendum held in Northern Ireland decides otherwise. Part of the Good Friday Agreement.

Very few people in Northern Ireland actually want this. The idea of an independent Northern Ireland has been associated with some very, very dodgy elements of Unionism in the past.

So, whether Northern Ireland joins the South or stays with UK no longer has any importance.

That hasn't happened though. There are many people throughout the EU (myself included) who are becoming increasingly nationalist because they feel that the people they have elected to represent them have signed their sovereignty away to a foreign power. We can't really do anything about it apart from vote for eurosceptic parties.

I knew that it wasn't a very well-known or popular idea, but I had no idea of those associations. I thought it was worth mentioning though, in addition to some of the other suggestions made here

And I think a lot of people are underestimating the hostility and passions that are still felt in NI when talking about this stuff.

I think it was the UDA who floated the idea of an independent Ulster, back in the 1970s/1980s, as they felt betrayed by the British.

I'm a Scot living in N.Ireland and I've been suggesting that solution for ages. Sadly there is no support for it amongst the people of N.Ireland.

That is very interesting. I actually just started doing some quick reading on the subject after you mentioned the associations of Ulster independence, and I noticed that one early proponent (W.F. McCoy) suggested Ulster would become a dominion (like Canada, Australia, New Zealand...). That was back in the 1940s however, which I believe was before the UDA's time

The majority of the people on the Island already want an Ireland free from the British terror state, but alas since that isn't enough I guess reunification can only come from the majority in the North wanting it. With the south currently being looted and pillaged by the IMF it wont happen any time soon. Reunification is only possible with a strong south, something which we wont see anytime soon.

So what was that "British terror state" you were going on about again?

Also, the IRA openly supported and assisted the Nazis against the British during World War II so I'm not taking any lessons on morality from people like that.

The level of racism on this thread is deplorable. If I wasn't so drunk, I'd go beat my wife in anger.

The best solution, is the status quo. Except all the dips**t IRA splinter cells should stop blowing up people so that a different flag flies in the country. It's f***ing dumb. Hopefully the racism dies down up there, there is a huge amount of it in politics; one of the party slogans was "because we don't want them* in"

What racism? :?

I was kidding, hence the second part of the sentence about conforming to an Irish stereotype :). Sorry for dropping the "R" bomb

Thank heavens for that. I reread and reread but couldn't see it. I thought my Aspergers had suddenly got worse. :D
